John Motson dies aged 77

Very sad news, RIP.

One of the few commentators I could always happily listen to, as he simply seemed to adore the game and could appreciate any good player playing it, regardless of the colour of their shirt or the name of their club. Just a genuine football fan, through and through. He'll be missed.

Upset by the news of Motty’s death. I posted earlier a story of taking him to the COM/Etihad for the first time and him telling me off:

He certainly had a good relationship with Bernard Halford and with City - a club he liked going to.

I think he became a bit of a caricature of himself later in his career but you couldn't fault his enthusiasm or dedication. He was part of a bygone era many of us grew up with but would've put most modern commentators to shame. Sad to hear of his passing. Oh what a goal, goal, goal, goal.....rest in the back of the net in peace Sir

He always gave the impression that he was just an football fan given an opportunity to work in the game. Almost came across as being giddy at times. That would be unfair though as he made a film once showing the detailed work and research he did before every game.

Unlike Barry Davies, who seemed to cover everything, I can’t remember Motson ever doing anything other than football commentary.

Seemed like a nice guy to.

He did tennis. One time at Wimbledon Jack Nicholson asked to sit in the commentators box next to Motson, who thus bagged an impromptu interview with the actor
