I always liked Motty and felt like he was a proper football fan and one of a select few commentators of his time. No doubt he’ll have plenty of tributes to that effect.
My only thought is he should have retired earlier - not just because his commentary started to suffer but because it seemed like it would have done him good. Though I get people cling on out of love for the job.
The commentary to much of my early memories of watching games. MOTD brought him into the homes of millions.
Had the pleasure of sitting next to him one time in the commentary gantry at Stamford Bridge....the notes he had and getting to see a master at work.

Though in my opinion he was not on Davies, Coleman and Moores level as a top pundit (he was the fletch of his day) He has became a footballing institution and better than the drivel we have now
