John Stones - 2016/17 performances

Stones needs to go back to basic and build from there. I have no doubt he can become the defender that is able to start build-up play, and play in a 3 man back line. Imo he started too well and than wanted to do too much too good. No doubt within 2-3 years he will be our new Kompany.

Loved the aggression he showed in the first half last night, looks a much better defender when he doesn't give players time to settle and think or space to run at him by backing off. Seemed to regress back into passiveness in the second half a bit but the whole team were playing a bit more conservatively and saving energy so I'm happy to forgive that. Would love to see him getting some game time with Vinny now so he can pick a few things up from the best.

I think the key is that if th team stop the oppo getting at our cbs, they are good enough to cope most of the time, but if the team slow up & the oppo get at our cbs, we are likely to concede a goal.

Stones was a lot more like a defender first half, covering with decent pace & it suggests that he can do it i the long term, in a Pep team which is fully functional.

Looked good again today, in previous weeks he's backed off backed off backed off, and then nothing.

Today he was backing off but just biding his time then making the challenge at the right moment.

Also won a lot of headers against Llorente and showed some aggression.

Totally agree. Good performance

Think he should be used sparingly while we have Vinny and Ota as first choice pairing. Stones has many years ahead and still learning the trade as CB

Agree in general but he backed off too much on their goal.

I'm pretty sure he's supposed to. He gets faced with a lot of situations where he's defending a single attacker on a breakaway. The 1st priority seems to be staying on feet and slowing down the break so support can get back, and to not under any circumstances go in and miss, resulting in a situation like the Lukaku one in the home game.

He could still be more aggressive but I think he's improving, it's just not going to be overnight.
