Defending is easier when you are a class footballer.2 class footballers, 2 "meh" defenders.
Who are the special defensive players from last season? And I mean from a defensive standpoint.Boateng isn't anything special defensively. Laporte was just as average as Stones last season but I rate both highly still, we could potentially be set at CB for 8-9 years

Wes? He is not even Average. The others are good. Godin, and Thiago Silva were probably the 2 best ones last season. Add Pique and that pretty much rounds up the 3 complete CBs from laat season. Alderwierld, Virgil and Kolcieny from the prem were Strong. So was Pepe, Ramos and Howedes. But outside of the everyone else seem to come with strengths and weaknesses.Not many in football these days but Alderweireld, Godin, Pepe, Pique, Morgan..
This is why I always ask the question, who people rate. There simply aren't many shutdown dominant complete CBs. Not now, nor ever.
In the absence of having a once in a bluemoon player, you are better of with footballers over bruths.
So, Bonucci, Varane, Laporte, Sule, Stones over Chiellini, Pepe, Zouma, Mangala, Rudiger for me.

stones has had a poor season but will get better how much is debatable but we will always be able to buy better for 40 million the only question is who is better ottamendi or stones

It all depends on how a team sets up defensively and whether the personnel fit that system or not. Some of the above listed defenders would struggle in our set up last season.
If Pep wants Stones who am I to argue.
One thing Stones has is ability on the ball and welcomes possession unlike some players.
Pep will iron out any issues or bad habits he may have in his game. I personally hope he signs

When each player would cost £40m+ it's hard to call it a coup, unless they turn into the next Maldini and Baresi then at best they'll live up to the price tag.

Wow! Owen stole the words right out of my mouth. I believe I have used similar words in arguments with Bluearmy. This error prone narrative is made up. He is no more error prone than Alderwierld. Who frankly was the best CB in the league last season.

Koscielny?!? He was absolutely shocking last season, Otamendi had a better season. Morgan ain't great but no denying he was absolutely fantastic last season. Silva is the best centre half for me quality wise but it's difficult when he plays in Ligue 1. Ramos? Hahaha, another one who is a great footballer but a shite defender.
Do agree with that last bit but, instead having to 2 footballers, why not pair a ball playing centre half and then a brute. That is the best combination in my opinion. Laporte or Stones partnered with Otamendi would be better than just a Laporte Stones partnership.
it's a theory folks have peddled for a while, but there really is no basis for it. 2 Intelligent footballers ate better in my opinion. See your point about Silva. As for Morgan I don't think he was fantastic at all. He was average on a team that worked hard as a group defensively. If you want an averagely skilled defender who was consistently good for his team, you are better off checking out Winston Reid, not Morgan.

Tbh I think Otamendi was a case of us not being able to get our money from Valencia (pre Peter Lim) and agreeing to take Otamendi in place of the Negredo fee to avoid getting them into serious trouble re FFP.
This. Its why we gave Denayer a new contract and then had to loan him. It was an opportunity that fell in our lap. The alternative was them selling him to United. I think the club felt it had to do it at the time.
