John Stones

Coleman is such a Guardiola player, akin to Danni Alves.

Good shout that, but doubt they will let us pillage whomever we want!

Yet he had a terrible season. But he's allowed that because we're not really after him.
So we can pontificate. Sorry but Stones is getting a load of crap for being in a shit defence.
Baines was also fucking awful last season.

I have been a big Stones hater the last couple of years but I will be behind a million percent when he signs.

One thing I did think of is he was poor last year in and out of the side etc and couldn't live up to hte hype but let's not forget he told the club he wanted to leave for Chelsea and it never happened so it can't be nice in and around a place every single day where you know people are looking at you thinking this **** doesn't even want to be here blah blah blah. Can't knock his confidence and I wonder what barca fans thought about a failed Pique being slot into their defence? Yet because he was great with the ball at his feet and guardiola knows how to train a CB he's been one of the best for the past 8 years or so.

Everton were playing the same wide open back and forth shit we were playing for much of last season. Even tremendous CBs like Kompany have been made to look a fool in that type of setup, it's not surprise that Stones and Funes-Mori were found lacking at times. I'm not saying he's the finished product but I find it hard to be scared off by looking bad in a system doomed to fail. You could say the same thing about Otamendi and Mangala, of course, but that's where the ball skills come into play.

The style of play does factor into it a lot. I did a little research and sorry in advance but I don't know how embed things. According to Squaka Everton had 51% possession last season. Compare that to Bayern who had 62%. (We had 54%). However, I think the most telling stats are the average defensive actions. Everton had a rating of 47 while Bayern had a staggering 25 while we had 44.

Average Defensive Actions
Blocks Clearances Interceptions
Everton 160 1,130 509
City 66 980 630
Bayern 46 356 445

Of course you have to figure out the Bunesliga is different and has less games, but Bayern have a lot less stats due to their 62% possession stats for one. They also do more interceptions than they do clearances and even fewer blocks. So even if we aren't at the level of what Bayern was, I think it's a clear indication of how we will try to play. Stones will be asked to anticipate and step up to intercept passes a lot when we lose possession. He may be in 1 v 1 situations a lot as well with the high line and balls played over the top.

Not having to defend, is the best thing if you have Boateng etc at cb. If you have to defend, you have a problem. I imagine that's the plan for Stones, as you say.
