We already paid part of the addons after reaching the Champions League semi final. I imagine his 40+ appearances last season paid some as well.
The brief was a £49m deal, which it is; £44m + a possible total of £5m. Without the addons the deal doesn't happen. So if Everton feel they can get the exact same deal, why accept £40m?
So we still haven't paid Liverpool's asking price for Sterling. If the add ons didn't matter, we wouldn't be seeing pretty much every deal involving younger players, being done to include add ons.
I don't understand the thinking, that Everton would somehow accept less for Stones because we negotiated the 'wrong way'. If they want 50 mil, they want 50 mil. We are clearly trying to get a bit knocked off, which, if we succeed, saves money & saves paying out the full amount straight away. If Everton won't budge, we either pay it or walk. Pep has probably decided which. I imagine we have to try our best in both Stones' & Sterling's case because on both occasions we have clearly talked to the player & he trusts us to do our best to sign him.
But I don't understand why it's a topic tbh. No chance Everton are just going to sell him for 40 mil because we play some kind of game with them. They want a lot more, we are probably trying to get him for less, plus add ons as it appears we just have with Sane.
