ROMAN ABRAMOVICH is bracing himself to take the decision he thought he would never have to – to sell John Terry.

Chelsea’s new manager Carlo Ancelotti steps into one of the toughest jobs in club football this morning faced by a host of problems he has to solve before he can even begin work on the training pitch. And top of the list is Terry and his future.

Manchester City’s determined pursuit of Terry has infuriated Chelsea, particularly stories about the £240,000 a week the Eastlands club are prepared to offer.

Chelsea have officially rejected two bids for Terry, the latest an offer of £30 million last week. But the club are braced for yet another sortie by oil-rich City for the captain who led the club to back-to-back titles.

And it is by no means certain the man regarded as Mr Chelsea will stay. A Chelsea insider told the Daily Express last night: “There is a feeling among certain people at the club that John is too powerful, that he wields too much influence.”

There has been anger among Chelsea’s top brass at some of Terry’s antics over the last year, and according to sources support for the England star within the dressing room is not total.

An additional, crucial factor is the long-standing back injury from which Terry, 28, has been suffering for years now. It flares up every season and is not getting any better.

Centre-back Terry has to have constant massages and treatment to keep the problem at bay, but it is a long-term concern.

Ancelotti flew to England on Saturday night after a brief break following his intensive language course in Holland. He met his backroom staff, including assistant Ray Wilkins, yesterday, and after being presented to the world’s media this morning he will meet some of his players this afternoon.

SEARCH FOOTBALL for:

Ancelotti’s first task will be ensuring that contract negotiations with a clutch of players, including Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole and Florent Malouda, are concluded as soon as possible.

But it is Terry who will dominate the agenda on the day Ancelotti is unveiled, to the fury of Abramovich.

Ancelotti will not be keen to lose a key player whose performances he has been studying on DVDs since April. He will sit down with Terry on Thursday when the player returns from holiday and demand answers. And only if they are the right ones will the situation be rescued.

Chelsea are annoyed that there has been no statement of intent yet from the Terry camp. Chelsea maintain publicly that Terry is not for sale, but if City’s next offer comes in at £40m, the word is that Abramovich may be tempted, and Ancelotti will begin the rebuilding of his squad without the player for so long regarded as the heart of the club.

That kind of money would enable Chelsea to bring in the sort of top-quality players they would need to replace not just Terry, but also his long-term partner Ricardo Carvalho, whose move to Inter Milan is still expected to go through. Ancelotti revealed – possibly unwisely – in his autobiography published just before he took the job, that Abramovich had told him he believed his team no longer had any personality, and that he no longer recognised them.

For so long now it has been Terry’s clenched-fist image which has embodied that personality. It may well be that Abramovich is close to deciding that image is no longer one he wants for his team in the new era.

Sources at Manchester City say the Terry camp are not discouraging the interest. Chelsea, in turn, say he is not for sale at any price. Terry knows that should he decide to quit the club where he has been since he was 14 he will face a massive backlash.

To leave for a club who will not be playing in the Champions League in a World Cup year would be inconceivable for an England captain under normal circumstances.

There could only be one factor that would persuade him – money. An offer to earn nearly double his Chelsea salary.

In the next 48 hours, Ancelotti will ask Terry to tell him that is not true, and that the much-vaunted blue blood coursing through the Terry veins remains a Chelsea shade, rather than that of Manchester City.

What was it that David Dean at Arsenal said a few years ago when Chealsea offered £50 million for Henry.

"The russians have parked their tanks on our front lawn and are firing £50 notes at us"

The Sheiks are parking their oil tankers on the kings road and flooding it with Petro Dollars !

Jamie Rednapp just on SSN.

Basically saying in his experience no smoke without fire - as far as he is concerned Terry or his people have spoken to city and said they are interested otherwise no offer would have been made.

He doesnt think he will come at the end of the day but with so much money......said its not the end of it by far.....

the most sense that has been spoken on SSN for weeks

I wonder if Jamie has been speaking to his cousin frank for some inside information?

Re: Chelsea reject Terry offer [Merged]

Untill i hear an official statment from JT im not giving up on this, i can see it happening and god i hope it does this above all other signings would be the biggest the club could ever make, more important than eto tevez or who ever.

From his point of view why would he want to leave his club chelsea, what can city offer him?

1, Wages, hes already one of the highest paid players in the league but city can pay him what ever he wants, no point in guessing what it might be but a shed load more than what he gets now
2/ Figure Head, Hughesy must want him to be the man to look up to in the squad been there done it, hes a born leader and winner the streo typical run through a brick wall type. a hughes type player vocal inspirational and class defender. I think hes the type of man who would buy into the Hughes city plan of making history and making terry the man to take us there
3/Umbro, there highest profile player on there book at what is now there highest profile club
4,World cup, Terrys last world cup does he want 60 + games to contend with or city 38 plus cup run more rest better equiped for the summer????

Proper world class center backs are few and far between and john terry is absolute top draw, a leader.with this man at the back and kompany beside him and given just behind and sticker would think shit im in for it today. then with de jong and barry infront of them its the best city team of my life.

anyway thats what im telling myself ha ha its just great to see city link with the worlds best players and im loving it

CITY ARE BACK CITY ARE BACK

Re: Chelsea reject Terry offer [Merged]

If we signed him it will be for money and nothing else. Would rather get Lescott.

We are going for both and dont be surprised if Toure comes as well!

Re: Chelsea reject Terry offer [Merged]

Toure would be better. Arsenal have done all they can now, and will not compete for the title anytime soon, he should jump ships and join here. Toure and Lescott would be better than that scum bag Terry. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try for Evra aswell. Utd have proved they are willing to sell their stars and Evra would be a great buy.

Re: Chelsea reject Terry offer [Merged]

toure no thank you why do you think he was dropped last season, hes not a touch on JT. lescott very good player but not world class if the terry thing does go tits up be very happy if we made an offer for him.

Evra - no ta

Agree not a great fan of Toure just know we were in for him, personally I would use him as bait to lure Ya Ya in who I believe we are also after!

Re: Chelsea reject Terry offer [Merged]

I venture to submit an opinion to see what everyone else thinks.

Remember the Gerard to Chelsea case a while ago ? Certain elements of Liverpool people didn't want him transferred away. Not saying anything amiss about JT and the London scene either.

Could it be JT would have to think about the ramifications for his family if he moved away from Chelsea ? Like property being damaged, cars being trashed, business interests being targetted, family threatened ? In other words, could he transfer away in peace ?

Some mindless people would not hesitate to target a hero if they feel he becomes a turn-coat; would he be at risk do you think ?

Once again, not suggesting he has links to anything unsavoury, but the way Gerard was allegedly treated made me think...

Sorry if off-beam - am willing to be happily corrected if my thoughts are running away with me.

Think this is alittle extreme really, some fans reckon Terry is worth selling for £40mil.

If I was a chelsea fan I'd be one of them, he's good but not that good. I'd take Carvalho or Puyol ahead of him every time.

Re: Chelsea reject Terry offer [Merged]

Carvalho and Lescott for me every day of the week. Toure misses a month with the african nations cup and has not been the same since getting malaria. He couldnt get in the Arsenal team last season and there defence was crap !

I cant see Terry signing when push comes to shove but it doesnt really bother me as long as we get a quality of players in that position I will be happy.
