Johnson [Merged]

Re: Johnson (merged)

Chelsea are braced for a mega-money battle with Manchester City to sign Portsmouth full-back Glen Johnson.

City have told Pompey they will pay a staggering £18million for Johnson, with Chelsea also ready to splash out on a player they sold for just £4m two years ago.

There is believed to be a clause in his contract that allows Johnson to quit Fratton Park if Portsmouth receive a bid in excess of £12m, but that now appears to be insignificant.

Other than offering a big transfer fee, City are also willing to hand Johnson a £120,000-a-week salary to convince him to follow Gareth Barry and turn his back on the chance of Champions League football next season.

But City are not just concentrating their efforts on Johnson, as they will make a firm £15m move for his England team-mate Joleon Lescott as well.

IMO we would be signing a player we do not need. So I hope this report is wrong like so many!

I can assure you this is not wrong...........the figures might be but the story isn't!

Re: Johnson (merged)

Richards days are numbered, Zab and A.N. Other will be holding the right back role next year IMO.

Re: Johnson (merged)

agree...dont think we need johnson.....lescott yes....johnson no

Re: Johnson (merged)

Fantastic news!

For all those who think we don't need him...

Two quality full-backs are the making of every top side, Johnson is that quality full-back we're after - and that's great news.

When he improves defensively he'll be one very special player.

Re: Johnson (merged)

The implications of a signing like this is what I have said several time in the run up to the transfer window.

I'm fully expecting some player to leave the club that we're not expecting. With the Barry signing it was easy for people to rationalise this as you just pop Kompany into the back 4 and Dunne moves on

but there are going to be signing that could well push other player to the bench or out the door

Hughes is building the best squad he can and as a result most players in the current squad are replaceable if a better player is available.

Re: Johnson (merged)

i agree - two top players in each position is key. Micah will have to take a leaf from Ireland and realise his potential

Re: Johnson (merged)

How about letting Richards go out on loan to a club that needs a CB? IMO he's never going to be a RB and he's not yet a consistent CB. I'd love to see him go to a club with just enough class to look likely to survive relegation, yet not too high expectations so he's persisted with as a CB even if he makes the odd cockup. And one more thing - not a club in London - he needs to stay far away from the bright lights and just concentrate on the football.

Wolves - maybe too likely to go down?
Wigan - hmmm, who knows how their new manager will perform?
Sunderland - maybe?

Still have a lot of hope for Richards but maybe right now we aren't the best club for his development.
