Joleon Lescott

I think our midfield has been better at showing for the ball off him than they were last season so he can play it nice and easy. I can't remember him hoofing it much at all this season

both Barry & Lescott take some shit on here, but IMO I think they are both outstanding most weeks for us. Unsung hero's.

I like Joleoninho. Great defender but not much of a footballer. Do the stats tell us that 99% of the passes were back to the person who passed to him, and/or didn't exceed ten metres?
This is the reason (imo)Mancini didn't play him because he thought Bayern would've slaughtered him when he had possession.
Instead they slaughtered Kolo when they had possession.
I said that imo that was his thinking behind it not that Kolo was any more adept, baring in mind he played Vinnie left (irrc).Although I don't think kolo was slaughtered at all just that we had become drunk on the momentum we'd created in the first 30mins.

So because he can do 50 simple short passes to either another defender or our midfield he is suddenly Messi with the ball at his feet?

You pass him the ball with a player chasing him down and he will either panic and hoof it or try and play his way out of trouble and fail. He has no technique at all with the ball at his feet unlike Kompany who has amazing technique with the ball at his feet.

Savic looks like he is comfortable on the ball and if he continues to develop as he is I can see Lescott's position being in contention very soon. The fact Mancini played Toure (albeit how unsuccessful he was) shows he is concerned about Lescott and looking for other options.

Love him, just love him.

Surely they were all sideways and backwards passes though, weren't they?

not sure the stats go into that much detail mate
If you use the Guardian Chalkboard (from where this 50:0 stat comes),you get a diagram that shows all the passes. The diagram is even more impressive that the simple statistic (and no, they are NOT all sideways and backwards passes).

I don't have the facility to show the diagram here, though perhaps someone else can. But it is easy to get it for yourself:

The Guardian Chalkboard is a brilliant resource.

I have frequently argued that Lescott has been seriously underrated. I fear that some City fans are impressed by style more than by substance. In terms of 'character', Joleon Lescott is a one-off.

I like the Beckenbaur style protruding runs he has added to his game lol.

On a serious note, he is a quality defender. Simple as that really. Sure, not the greatest of distributors but he can defend and thats the important thing. And looking at his stats, he recognises his weakness and keeps it simple. There are plenty of other players in the side who can work the ball.
