I think you're spot on with this, although it's worth adding that Evans will only be a fourth choice. As you say though - the prospect of spending £30m on a backup is madness. If you're going to sanction that level of money you'd be best paying the extra and signing someone who's the best around - who'd actually challenge for a first team spot.
Agree completely. I'd chuck in one more bid for Evans (let's say £23m for the sake of argument) and if/when it gets rejected, announce publicly that we are ending our interest. If Evans is in any way interested in playing for us, it would be up to him to then agitate for a move

I think Pep gets on really well with Pulis & won't want Evans agitating for a move.

£30m is too much for Evans, but if we went for a top class player now eg VVD we'd probably end up paying £70m The market has gone crazy.

Not signing a proper cb now, will cost us 30 mil extra next season, for the same reason.

Your laughing at what you perceive will be the outcome (which may be correct), or could be a million miles off (price and effect) .

Lescottt was not as good as Evans, he was a Mangala mk2. He also cost more than Evans will cost and that was a generation ago.All perfectly true, especially about GB who was one of the best, apart from the fact we wouldn't want Barry in this team either, nor Lescott, who was twice as good as Jonny Evans.
A prime Barry would get in this team. He was better and a far more intelligent footballer than Fernandinho

That surely comes down to where the priorities are set this window? Maybe we are allocating our budget elsewhere and accept we will need to spend big next season on a CB.Not signing a proper cb now, will cost us 30 mil extra next season, for the same reason.
