Is this 'fourth choice' argument giving a false impression though? We all know that Pep thinks it's a squad, not a team game, so he'll likely play quite a lot and in a back 3, probably quite often. Then again, if that's the case, it's probably good enough reason for Pep to jettison Mangala.

He's definitely going to get game time, otherwise we wouldn't be signing him. But I suspect if one of Vinny, Otamendi, or Stones got injured we'd just play a back four much more often.

We need cover for Kompany. Last season Kolarov, Stones and Otamendi went to pieces in his absence. I think Evans would be good enough to play in Kompany's absence, and 24 hours on I have not seen one suggestion of a home grown player who could cover for Kompany. That player has to be experienced. We're not looking for a young player who we can develop.

Personally I don't see the need for an experienced 4th centre back. We could easily (and probably will considering the amount of attacking players we have) switch to a back four. Im really struggling to see any logic behind this transfer. Tosin or Mangala (who the club spent a fortune on) would be perfectly suitable to come in for the odd game. If Stones and Otamendi are still pissing about during the first half of season then sign someone in Jan.

30 million for Evans is an embarrassment though. May as well gone for bloody John Terry if we were that desperate.
