Jonny Evans

This reminds me of the Santa Cruz signing. Doesn't matter what the pricetag is, we're just set on buying regardless.

Hope that isn't the case.

He is a good player and could definitely do a job for us he is low risk as he knows the league. He is a left footed cb, good on the ball and a solid defender. He is no where near as bad as people are trying to make him out to be (although I may be biased I'm from northern Ireland). Even I will admit that 30mil is way too much but the market is mental at the minute and I can't think of many alternatives who are also low risk signings really don't think we can afford to sign another flop at the back.

Yer probably right, d - he's nowhere near as bad, but he's nowhere near as good as £30m. Pulis is having his '99 revenge with that price. If Evans comes for £30m then Barca will be adding a zero onto Messi's fee! Johnny Foreigner can see a sucker when one gets his cheque book out!

Personally wouldn't really think he can add to what we already have and we need to start looking at some of the younger players if we are short on cover through injury /suspension etc.

I think another CB is important but not a 30 year old who really is past his prime at the very top level and hence IMO even if was available on a free transfer I would say no.

Why we don't just write a blank cheque and get VVD I do not know. £15m for Evans maybe but £25-30 is fucking stupid. I'd rather play EDS lads than have pants pulled down by Pulis

I agree, it is hard to accept that the other side is Tony Pullis. Even harder when we know the exorbitant price beeing mooted is for a die hard fan of our worst enemies, whose wife still work for the propaganda unit of this same enemy, who has proven time and again that they are willing to do anything to harm us.

He should know more than us he's been a pro and is now a manager. I'd expect him to know a fair bit in fact. He has experience we will never have. BUT he isn't infallible and he's proven that last year not just with his signings- bravo, nolito, - but with his decisions and tactics Monaco away for one. And he is just like any other manager ultimately and will be judged on what he wins. At city he has had no success and therefore he can be questioned especially about a signing like Evans. If you don't agree then you are giving him a free ride because he is pep and that can't be right can it? This isn't a pep out post it's a don't buy Jonny Evans post. He's an average has been who ain't worth 30mil in this or any other market.

Good post. Pep had a honeymoon period last year (fair enough) but will be judged more stringently at the at the end of this term. If we do really well, any angst over JFE, Bravo, Hart and multi-million expenditure will be historical nit-shit. If we win nothing, his credibility will be challenged and his more quirky decisions wheeled out in evidence.

Big stakes. Both he and we need serious silverware.

Think the £30m is City leaking info to get us all on side - we were going mad about £18m for him a week ago and now that would feel like a bargain!

Fair comment that mate.

Total "zero upside" proposition here. Fan base overwhelmingly hates the idea. If he does brilliantly people will just be waiting for his first screwup to get the knives out. And the minute he has a bad game the pitchforks are out in earnest.

Really hoping this does not happen. Almost by definition could not end well.

I don't even think it's really about the price. Evans isn't a lousy defender. He just isn't a very good one. In short, he's mediocrity personified. Fourth choice? Maybe, just maybe, although £30 mill would be some sort of joke for a defender who's not very young, and not very good. If Vinny gets crocked (or Stones, or Ota) and we find ourselves having to play Evans against the likes of Real fucking Madrid, or Bayern fucking Munich, there'll be tears.
All along the line, this just feels like a backward move. A throwback to the 2012 window, when we seemed to be buying distinctly ordinary players out of desperation. I find myself wondering if we ever made any serious moves for Keane. I would have thought we had more drawing power than Everton, on every level.
If Evans comes, I'll support him, because he'll be wearing that shirt. Just don't ask me to get enthusiastic about it.
