Crystal is alright if its just that you're drinking. On Tuesday started off in a Holt's pub and there was only Crystal or Diamond so I just had a pint of Crystal. Went to another place and had Carling and you can taste the difference immediately. Its as if they cram the shit with sugar.

*Tin hat on*

There's not many truly great beers that come from 'up North' nowadays. Timothy Taylor ales are superb, but apart from that there really isn't much to write home about.

Worked in half a dozen Holts pubs and drank in dozens more. Regal, Crystal etc are rank. They used to do one called "Holtenbrau" which was mega strong, but > 3 pints = throwing up tackle.

As for worst Bitter, Robinsons by a mile.

"Kalt Pilsner Lager' by Hydes is the way forward. 1.80 a pint in The Courtyard off Oxford Road. Does the trick nicely.

Holts and JW Lees make the worst bitter I've ever tasted. Tastes like the arse water of a thousand tramps, sieved through an old sock.

This is like nectar of the gods compared to the Battery acid, delicately infused with fermented vomit that is Ansells Bitter, a god-awful concoction from the Potteries that is only good for calming lunatics. You are talking serious swill here, but what a great topic. Ale.
Keep 'em coming.

If you get a good pint of Holt's Bitter, then it can be spot on....not many pubs (landlord or manager) know how to keep it properly though....The Bluebell in Moston is one that does, as is The Railway on Dean Lane Newton Heath (as previously mentioned) is another. Though kept good or bad, it never fails to leave me with a splitting headache the next day...

Similar for JW Lees....used to hate that, but had only had it served 'badly'. It needs to be kept right.....Good pubs for Lees I use are The Rain Bar in town, The Elizabethan in Heaton Misery, and Success ToThe Plough my local now in Dale....but the very finest pint of Lees's to be found is in The Blue Pitts Inn opposite Castleton railway station....superb.

Couldn't tell you bout either brewerie's lagers.....just know it isn't either brewer's main strengths or origin, so they produce it purely for trend reasons for the lager boys....

Special mention while talking Manc breweries for Hydes....top beer. And micro-breweries Marble and Heywood's Phoenix too.

I'm not a fan of TT tbh. I was brought up on proper cask conditioned beer but these days I prefer my beer chemically cleaned, chilled and filtered.
