I find it fascinating that there’s all of this grumbling about the fee when we:
- Maguire: £80m in 2019
- di Light: €80m in 2022
Whose transfer to Bayern from Juve was to a league and club that tries not to under pay as much as they can somewhat similar to us actually except I guess also willing to spend such as we are seeing perhaps with Harry Kane when they think it’s the right player that they feel they need or is worth it.
- have inflation, in general, globally
- Inflated fees for Premier league clubs by default
- Chelsea and their spending last year adding to inflation
- He may be a defender, but he is arguably the most unique defender in the world for what he offers
- Our club and manager can only find and accept certain levels of quality in players, especially for positions where the attributes are difficult to find and the need is high
- His age being low versus quality and potential high and extremely high, particularly under pep, given his track record, so you’re buying not just what he offers now but 10 years arguably a potential growth
- And then we have these transfer fees listed below beginning in 2017 for defenders
- two of whom were older than he by more than a couple of years when the transfers took place:
- Maguire: £80m in 2019
- di Light: €80m in 2022
