Manchester City agree with Leipzig's Gvardiol - 100 million transfer?
According to kicker information, the Champions League winner has agreed on a long-term commitment with the 21-year-old Croatian and informed RB Leipzig about his transfer intentions. A first official offer is still pending, but is expected in the next few days.
Gvardiol has no exit clause in its contract dated to 2027 for this summer. RB Leipzig is basically ready to let the defensive player signed by Dinamo Zagreb two years ago for 18 million euros, but only for a transfer fee in the range of 100 million euros. This would make Gvardiol the most expensive transfer of a defender.
Gvardiol had missed Croatia's knockout games in the Nations League and instead underwent a - according to RB information minimal - intervention in the groin area. These complaints had slowed him down in the season finale, among other things, in the league games against Freiburg and Schalke. In the winning cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt, he was missing because of a red lock.
Prime example of Leipzig scouting
Gvardiol's career is a prime example of Leipzig scouting. Already three years ago, the defender at the age of 18 was hired by the then Leipzig sports director Markus Krösche, but initially borrowed for one year to his home club Dinamo Zagreb in order to continue collecting playing practice. With the change of Dayot Upamecano in the summer of 2021 to FC Bayern Munich, the place for Gvardiol became free in the Leipzig Defence. The physically robust and technically disdated defensive player immediately turned out to be a top performer, played 87 competitive games for Leipzig and also became a regular at the World Cup third Croatia.
