What is all this back up nonsense?

We play 60 games a season and with a world cup bang in the middle of the season and the 5 sub rule, ALL our squad will be getting lot's of minutes.

Hallelujah, I've been banging on about this thank you.

Any one coming in is taking a cut in minutes if they are a start where they are, that's the bit you would have to persuade someone they will get a fair crack. Either someone who will back themselves to be better sooner or later than the 3 senior cbs we have or doesnt mind the rotation prob not an easy find at this level and price.

Not counting Stones/Laporte/Dias from last season Ake and the rest made up 21 starts and 2085 minutes.

Total minutes avg over 4 CBs is about 2825 minutes if all fully fit all season and rotated equally

Gvardiol (for example) made 40 starts and played 3502 minutes last season.

You mean like when Dias came in?

And he won fuck all and got paid probably half of what he would here. Players wil move to big clubs to be at big clubs, to win things, to play with the best, be coached by the best, be in various high profile competitions, get paid well etc. Not to count minutes. Which I'm sure is a consideration too, but one they will back themselves on.

Yes exactly but we were losing/lost Kompany and Otamendi at the time, this will be a harder (not impossible) sell IMO with 3 quality CBs ahead.

gonna be interesting to see who goes for it.

Who? did you reply to the right thing? I said this in the first paragraph

It was really on the last bit, about Gvardiol having olayed more minutes where he is, but fair enough on covering it earlier yourself. And fair too on the response above to both posts.

Regardless of all the 'but we have 60 games, we rotate' anyone coming in has to be sold on that, you are gonna play less and you might not play every big game, but you will be improved by Pep and win stuff.

If its anyone under 23/24 i'll be impressed with his mentality straight away. Kinda like the interview with Ortega, Im here to push as much as I can so watch your shirt.

And ambitious players back their talent, self belief is the No1 requirement at a big, title winning club, without that you have no chance.

This club attracts winners, not bench warmers, they belong in stretford.

60 games, world cup, 5 subs and a history of CB with injurie issues, any top player who is hungry would die to join our club.

To become an elite athlete you almost always require absolute dedication, focus and confidence in your own ability.

Any player who has the opportunity to join city will do so and they’ll back themselves to displace whoever is currently in their position. It’s the way they’re wired.

Potentially 65, guaranteed 46. Anyone coming in has to be sold on starting less, and playing less than they are now. Just a fact they will have to accept the rotation aspect of the setup, some wont want to, some wont care.

Ake got 1700 minutes last season I don't know why people are pretending like whoever is coming is going to be happy with that. Look how many players want to leave us now because they are not getting minutes, players with elite mentality, winners like jesus and sterling. if you're a good player and you have a choice between being a guaranteed starter for idk, chelsea or a 4th choice for city, I'd argue more players would choose chelsea.

What about '4th choice' at City and guaranteed starter at Liepzig or Sevilla?

1700 minutes if true isn't that terrible, played in 27 games. Wasn't available a good few games too through injury. And wasn't as good as the other 3. I imagine most players will back their quality and fitness to beat that. They should.

His thought process could be "I could wait a year and be a starter for chelsea/bayern/madrid/PSG or I could move to city now and get 1700 minutes" and I don't blame him for backing himself to not accept a lesser role to begin with. It's not small menality, it's knowing your abilities

Made 19 starts though, most players we are looking at made 35-40 last season, its a tricky sell, RB & Sevilla are both Champions League clubs.

Just on that, if the thinking (not yours alone, a few have mooted that) is that players wouldn't accept limited minutes, then why would our academy kids accept that too? Surely it is just as important if not more so for them to play more and they would rather seek guaranteed experience elsewhere than be a back-up back-up here. Which would only leave close to retirement payers on their last paycheck shot at glory.

True. Guess we'll see who the club target and what their thoughts are, whoever we go for will be backing themselves I'm sure and not coming here thinking 1700 minutes is the height of their ambition.

Depends what they want & Jack wanted to play ucl football & if they see it as a temporary stop, Ake a 2 times title winner can now decide whether he wants more game time at Chelsea. Nathan at Bournemouth like Phillips while at Leeds & Grealish at Villa would never of got a sniff of a league medal. Similar to when Delph was here, quite happy to get opportunity to win things even if doesnt mean being 1st choice.

I could see a younger CB who can cover a couple of roles, take the spot. Banking the idea 'I want to improve/be the best' and Pep will do that. Get a football education now, if i cant displace one of the 3 etc move on later.
