Joy Division / New Order thread

Joy Division, by a country mile. Don’t get me wrong, I like New Order too but it’s akin to asking The Smiths or Morrissey.

Like it's even a choice.

No one in New Order ever wrote anything this good...

Existence, well what does it matter?
I exist on the best terms I can.
The past is now part of my future.
The present is well out of hand...

Joy Division!

So I can cop to She's Lost Control and LWTUA and Transmission as better than anything NO ever did. But on balance there are more songs by NO I love because they put forth an immense number of really great tunes, and Ian Curtis is dead and therefore has no say in the matter.

NO is my favo(u)rite band of all time ever. If I had to do without one of them, how am I going to do without my favo(u)rite band? I'm not.

What about the 3 members of New Order who were also in Joy Division?

Ah, come on. It’s a fair analogy. A truly great band followed up by something good, but not quite in the same league.

Are you really telling me that if you played a Smiths song and a Morrissey song back to back to someone who had never heard them before that that person would be able to tell they weren't the same group? No way. I pay a bit of attention and even I can't always remember.

New Order's sound was quite different from Joy Division's save for Movement and obviously Ceremony. I mean musically, not just lyrically.

I don't see how New Order isn't great, just a different kind of greatness.
