Joy Division / New Order thread

Right. He didn't even want to/couldn't sing and play guitar. The fact that NO not only carried on without a truly unique and iconic lead singer, but made a 40 year career out of it turning out great tune after great tune is an accomplishment that very few bands in history have ever matched. I can't think of another offhand. Pink Floyd maybe? Does Foo Fighters count?
40 years? They have split up for at least 10 of those, not had Hook for the last 12 years and not released anything decent since 2000-ish.

Were a great band. Now a shadow of their former selves.

The last album had some great tracks, Plastic and tutti fruity wouldn’t look out of place on the mighty Technique.

They were of their time, but Joy Division is timeless.

I can totally buy this as a difference.

Would Joy Division have gone the way New Order went musically if IC had lived? Would the quality of JD's work have deteriorated? Would they have just split up? Would JD have ever been as good if IC hadn't been so tortured and ill that he killed himself?

From all I know/have read about Ian if he could have gotten healthy physically or psychologically (spiritually?) I'd bet he would have approved of JD's/NO's direction. After all it was disco that cheered them up after he died and inspired the EP and then Power, Corruption and Lies.

And this is one reason I adore them. I think their later albums have been really strong. I love a lot of Get Ready and Siren's Call and Music Complete too, not to mention the earlier catalog. That's a lot of years of good stuff. Not too many can claim such consistency.

I don't agree about their recent work at all, though you're right about the hiatuses. They miss Hooky and he's totally iconic -- but he's also a dick, so I can forgive them that. And I can get behind a split because one of the band members wants to stay home to take care of the kids.

Like it's even a choice.

No one in New Order ever wrote anything this good...

Existence, well what does it matter?
I exist on the best terms I can.
The past is now part of my future.
The present is well out of hand...

Ridiculous tune.

I first heard this on the jukebox in Corbiere’s and it gave me goosebumps.

We'll never know about the first 3 questions but for the 4th, probably not. But isn't that what makes most truly great art?

Yes, totally. It's a different kind of great art than New Order. New Order is great pop art, completely consumable. And creating that is a talent in and of itself.

Shit, my favorite record ever is Gang of Four's Entertainment and every guitar solo is like listening to someone scratch a chalkboard with a fistful of needles. Great art too.
