my personal choice would be ceremony

I'd heartily agree if there were a good studio recording of Joy Division doing that one. Unfortunately, all we have is the New Order "cover."

Great song. As matter of fact, the opening bit is my ringtone.
shame that the jd version is so raw and unpolished

edit

then again, a bit like us at the mo

The New Order version is fantastic, what's your problem with it? And New Order are Joy Division basically, so I don't see how you can 'cover' yourself.

except for one slightly different ingredient

the writer, singer and general all round star of the band, was dead

SF is spot on. Ian Curtis song writing and lyrics were second to none. New Order as good as they were are just a cover version

-- Tue Dec 07, 2010 7:48 pm --

Somervillain - You have answered my question:

Ceremony is my favourite song its amazing only the one recording of it about and i actually like it more, for that. Even though the New Order version sounds better its not Ian Curtis singing

by the way Control is a great film if you have not seen it

But the lyrics are only one part of the song. What about the guitar, bass, drums? Would you be calling it a 'cover' if one of the other members of the band had died? Don't get me wrong about Curtis, I think he was a wonderful lyricist and a brilliant writer and his death was completely and utterly tragic, BUT, it gets on my rag when people think he 'was' Joy Division. A brilliant lyricist yes, but he never wrote any actual music. I don't think that they would have survived and continued on after the suicide if, for example, it had been Sumner who'd died, who was the actual musical director & coordinator of the group.

It was me who called it a cover??

there's absolutely nothing wrong with the music on the new order version of ceremony, and is mush more polished than the JD version
but you can not compare the masterful singing of Curtis with the insipid whine from sumner on that particular song
sumner's singing improved over the years but to even compare it to Ian Curtis is, quite frankly, a joke

I wasn't comparing sumner's singing to Curtis's, I was just saying that Sumner had a much greater influence on Joy Division's sound, due to his guitars, synths, and his role as the kind of director or arranger of the music. And besides, I do quite like Sumner's singing on Ceremony, it sounds innocent and raw and kind of mournful.

unfortunately his child like singing takes away from the power of the lyrics and the focus of the song
if the lyrics or singing weren't so important they wouldn't be quite revered as they are
