Watched the documentary last night, what was the big fuss about them?
Iain Curtis couldn't sing for shit and danced worse than Bez.
What is the appeal? Genuinely want to know what it is.
I've asked this question many a times and people genuinely think they were class!
Ian Curtis' sang like the average person in the shower on a Monday morning after having a mad session the night before, terrible singing! Don't think there's one tune I like and I went through my late teens trying to force myself into listening them.

Atmosphere is one of my favourite songs and joy division one of my favourite bands. I think musically they are as important as buddy Holly, the Beatles or velvet underground. They are the link that moved punk on to what we now listen to.
I remember doing some music coursework in school and what i submitted was a near perfect rip off of Transmission. Thing is, id never even heard it at the time... My music teacher wouldn't accept that id never heard the song in my life and i had to redo it. Twat.

its not so much about the singing(admittedly its not great) its more about context and placement of the band at the time and as a previous poster has said they were a template for many a post punk band subsequently
plus the music was damm good

The music was fantastic. Shadow Play still sounds brilliant every time i hear it all these years later.
The first New Order album" Movement" (essentially a Joy Division sound without Curtis) is one of my fav albums of all time.
the first band I ever saw live (supporting The Buzzcocks) - Unknown Pleasures is one of the top 10 albums of all time - I remember to this day buying it from Vibes in Bury and rushing home to play it and being blown away by the genius of it!!!
