Juanma Lillo | Leaving the club before the CWC (p52)

Pep needs a strong number 2 beside him.

It's no coincidence our best teams have come when we had Arteta in the centurion years and Maresca when we won the treble. Both are now managing CL teams in Arsenal and Chelsea.

Lillo was a journeyman coach at best.

What book was that? Has he been with us Two seasons? I think we have gone backwards generally in that time and for a host of reasons. Maybe I’m being unfair to the guy but he clearly didn’t make the effort to learn English so his comms with the players would have been tricky for some.
2 seasons in this stint, he was here for 2 season before that (20-22) and managed Al Sadd in the year in between.

Pep wouldn't have had him back if he wasn't highly thought of.

Peps had him twice now so I've no reason to doubt he's good at his job and helps pep but the turnover of our backroom staff is like no other so I don't expect this to be a major thing.

They're constantly getting poached as others scramble for anybody that's been in contact with Pep in the hope his magic can rub off on them.

Whoever pep wants is fine by me, hopefully somebody to reinvigorate him, inject some freshness and new ideas and cause him to up the tempo in our game.

Bonus if it's a club legend but ultimately doesn't matter.

The Marti Perarnau book The Pep revolution. Apparently he was very popular with all the players and all the other coaches. He was with us then went away for the treble year but was still in contact with Pep and a regular visitor, especially leading up to the final. He was also it seems a very calming presence at stressful times of the seasons helping keep a lid on emotions
The perception from the outside is very different to the reality ,having read the book.

what was Fernandinho doing in Brazil btw? just a staff member or was he a headcoach there? or player-coach? I think he was still playing a bit after leaving us.
I reckon he will be part of the staff here but not assistant manager just yet.
