I get what you’re saying and it’s an interesting one - but ultimately he achieved success at the highest level, broke records for club and country and played until he was 35. It’s hard to criticise his career when he achieved so much.

He had to be a decent player to do all those things and still carve out the career he had. Personally think he was a wasted talent and from an English perspective it's a real shame. He was probably odds on after Euro 2004 to win a Balon D'or or two. Can't recall many people of any nationality having the kind of impact like he did on that tournament. Not knowing at the time that would be his peak I genuinely thought we finally had 'one'. May be regarded as a rag and English great but nowhere near an international one.

Yeh fair enough, for England though I genuinely think we’ve lacked a certain bastard on the pitch and we’ve always just been too ‘nice’ - at international level I hope he can replicate what he’s doing come the Euros.

Needs a huge kick up the arse. Absolutely no awareness of what's going on around him. Seriously, he needs a reality check because he's obviously able but grifting in the Spanish league shouldn't be his peak as a proffesional.

Which is why he didn't join us.

Good point. Wanted easy street .
There was also a certain level of hype around his brother recently, that fell flat. Problem being the press will have Phil benched before they'll admit he's not on Phils level.
