I have said this before, so I am sure a few will roll their eyes at my repetition, but I have been watching both Premier League and La Liga for 40 years (in the stands and on TV), and I can say with supreme confidence that the Premier League is now a better, much more challenging competition than La Liga for a number of reasons. And that is especially true when comparing the rigours of playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona versus essentially any team in the PL today.I agree with this all, but especially this piece. Maybe people are only watching the highlights and don’t see all the “ugly bits” that happen outside that. We mythicize La Liga, farm the Bundesliga (and assume their players aren’t good enough to stay there), and kind of ignore Serie A (send them our retirees).
He did start the season on fire, but he’s cooled and if our players did that we’d be hearing it till no end.
In my opinion, the difference is so pronounced that assessments of individual success at the top level in Spain versus in England need to be weighted to adjust for that gap. Running rampant in the league for six months for Real Madrid is really not the same as what Foden is currently doing, for instance. Or what Haaland did last season. Or what Rodri has done for many seasons now.
But so many treat Bellingham’s performances as equivalent. And ignore the petulance and shitehousery so prominent in his play now.
It is dumbfounding at times.
