Just Stop Oil protests

China is investing a fortune in green technology. It plans to reduce its emissions by 65% by the end of the decade. More electric vehicles are sold in China than in the rest of the world.

While it is true to say China has been the biggest culprit in recent years due to its fast growth, it is also true to say that China recognises the need to change its energy profile and is investing heavily to do so. Primarily, it sees an economic advantage in doing this before the rest of the world.

I think Just Stop Oil and XR can continue to focus on the UK. It being their country of residence and all that.
That's laughable. There is no evidence whatsoever that China will reduce its Co2 emissions anytime soon. The trajectory of Chinese total emissions right now is up and almost exponentially up.

A major achievement for China would be if it reduced the rate that it was increasing its total emissions. It can't reduce total emissions until that happens so a 65% fall in total emissions is just again laughable. I'd be surprised if it happened within 50 years.

UK emissions meanwhile ARE falling and they've been falling since the late 90's. Our total emissions are equivalent to what they were in the late 1800's, they're almost negligible. If the UK stopped all activity and became carbon zero then nothing whatsoever would change with respect to the global problem.

However, if China halted its activities and did the same then the problem of climate change would be resolved almost immediately. That's the difference and it's why protesting in the UK is just utterly stupid. China is unfortunately contributing the most to this problem and that contribution is increasing.

The Chinese must be laughing their cocks off watching us fall over ourselves as Tarquin and Esmerelda take a day off from attending Oxford to flick paint at the commoners and call them names.

As China makes all of our stuff no wonder theirs is going up as ours falls.

It isn't just a Chinese issue.

China arrests protesters and has a very different view on things like free speech, that's probably the main difference lol. And there are some on here who want an economic and political model that is just like China!

Think "Death Valley". There are plenty of locations on Earth uninhabitable for animals or plant life. It's normally stored on land unfit for development.

It's like this; the LLW stuff, stored underground in concrete, low yield, half life of around 30 years or so. Majority of waste. The HLW, made into glass, where it can decay safely because it's effectively become "rock" form again. This is the thousand year stuff, but in it's "glass" form, you can't do anything with it expect lick it, I guess.

and where are these places in the UK for our waste?

Didn’t strike me as particularly humorous.

You can find out what China is aiming for below. For example it has reduced the carbon intensity of its economy by 46% and is aiming for 65% by 2030. It is still too high - driven as it is by the size of its economy, but it is incorrect to say China is doing nothing about its emissions problem and use of fossil fuels. Its aim is to have 25% of its energy from non-fossil fuels by 2030.

Note how much difference a 65% change in rate makes to total emissions..... It will be 20-30 years until China reduces total emissions to 2010 levels.

I'd also love to read about the source of where all this data comes from. I mean, COVID taught us that we should trust everything that we're told, especially from the Chinese right?

Whether you chose to believe the Chinese is up to you. But the data shows that China has taken steps to green its energy consumption and that trend will continue given the level of investment.
