Kalidou Koulibaly

It was ideal time to sell Zinchenko, Otamendi and Gunodgan last summer. Two of them had year left on their deals and Otamendi wanted to go last summer. Then we proceeded to give both long term extensions....

I have always questioned this; why do CIty hand long deals to players who can easily be improved on? Its fucking crazy as it hampers our progress as obviously its impossible to improve on the key players we have.

With respect, the potential transfer of the biggest player in the world, on some of the biggest wages with all that entails, is bound to require huge resources and input and cause a distraction to any management team, no matter how experienced, it's only natural.

I am sure some of the team have always been working on our other transfers, but it would be naive to suggest our transfer window has been not been significantly effected by the Messi transfer.

Hopefully we can sort all our business out in the remaining time :-)

Well firstly the details of the Messi deal have been long in the making - we have tried to sign him before (and he has nearly come) so the base of that will have still been there. Things/details will have changed but the a big part of the work around the finances for it will have already changed.

Secondly in a post covid work no one is travelling anywhere - deals will be done by phone/video etc - the only reason Pep and Txixi etc would have gone to barca was for Messi - they rarely travel for other deals (esp Pep) so again this wont have had too much affect.

I would imagine (though I dont know obviously) that the team invovled in transfers has a number of layers depending upon how big/significant the transfer is - lower level players need lower levels of the team

What is holding up the deals is the opposing chariman/clubs/agents - dealing with the likes of ADL (and others like Levy etc) ALWAYS goes like this - he is a meglamaniac

I think that repectfully people are buying into a perceived and media narrative that may happen if we dont get our targets.

Four more years of Zinchenko?! Who the hell wrote that contract? Jesus...

To be honest Zinchenko has never been the problem. At 500k he is more than proved himself worthy as a squad place and fill in, as and when required.

The problem has always been the failure to buy a first choice left back to hold down that slot.

Mendy lacks concentration and Delph, Danilo, Cancelo have hardly impressed enough to hold down the position on a daily basis.

Mendy's agility looks to have been affected by injury too.

My only problem is with the whole cb thing, as I said in the other thread.

We have known for years, it would need doing, by this time. Why are we involved in transfers now & why has Otamendi got so long on his contract ?

SO we get some sort of fee for him?

So much for all those blues who claimed we can buy Messi and Koulibaly.

Kompany retired in 2019. If City don't sort out the central defensive problems with our financial power questions should be asked.

We are clearly trying

If other teams dont want to sell then what else can we do? Messi being the perfect example - he has pblically stated he doesnt want to be at barca but they are still going to keep him.

People seem intent on blaming the club - we are not in full control of this

Imagine its Derby Day. Or the day City go to Anfield. You think City's defence is equipped for that? If not, you should be p'ssed. It's September the 12th and professional football clubs maximise every opportunity they have.

Our defence was not even equipped to handle Lyon (neither were our forwards).

I have faith in city's defence, we only conceded the second least at year, I don't understand the re-writing of history that our defence is shit reminder that we're consinstantly actually one of the best defences in the league, the stats don't lie.
it's a bunch of reactionary nappy shitting nonsense.

I'll toss you a bone, if we sell, Stones, Garcia & otemendi then I'll say the way you're acting is warrented. Until then have a bit of patient.
Our defence does need improvement that surely is an indisputable fact. A replacement for Kompany will be the acid test.
You make a valid point that statistically we still concede fewer than most but this hides obvious frailties. In particular astute teams are finding it relatively easy to unlock our high line defence. There is a multiplicity of explanations that have been advanced on here as to why that might be the case and of course lack of personnel is only one of them.

This. What frustrates me is the number of chances which the opposition need to score and how many goals are conceded by sloppy play.
