this might be a bit controversial, but where does the notion that our recruitment team is incapable of making mistakes come from?

I trust them and they are full of very intelligent people. But they are human. they may very well be misjudging a given situation, like any other human. That doesn't mean I don't have trust in them, but I also don't have blind and cult like belief in them that I would classify ANY attempt to see an opinion different from them disrespectful or wrong, and I genuinely don't understand why some people here take offense to that.

It's the same team that spent 100 million on grealish, and I STILL think that was the wrong idea. It's the same team that brought mendy, look how that turned out.

On the balance they are extremely good at what they do and almost always get it right. But never in a million years would they always get it 100%, and I think this is one of those times. Simple.

That second sentence has nailed it for me mate. If Liverpool signed him I wouldn't bat an eyelid. We can do so much better.
If the rags signed him for £60m I would piss myself laughing.

Tbf this isn't a bad question.

But I'd ask you one for perspective. Why do you think City are interested in him? The rumours are that City and Pep have pushed quite hard for this. Suppose it's true, what would be their argument?

It’s actually a quite simple syllogism. Bielsa obviously was quite fond of Phillips. He relayed that to pep. Pep is quite fond of bielsa. Pep has asked for phillips

Far be it from me to tell you that, they have a lot of reasons that I am not aware of. Squad requirement (homegrown), they like the attributes he gives. Who knows. Genuinely it could be that they've crunched the numbers and realized they need at least 1 homegrown player or they can't wrap the squad up, and decided the drop off between what would be perhaps an alternative DM on the list who's not homegrown and him is smaller than what would be between, say Cucurella/other non-homegrown leftback and a homegrown leftback.

Honestly don’t think he was any worse than anyone else out there tonight. I don’t know if we are in for him or what we will pay if we are.. but I can’t judge him on that shitshow. I know Kyle John and Phil are fucking miles better than what they showed tonight.

I hope I’m proved wrong but at the moment I can’t see this being anything but a complete joke of a signing and at £60mill plus wages. We bought Haaland for less, just let that sink in WE BOUGHT HAALAND FOR LESS
Don't need that to sink in.....Spuds (allegedly?) are paying £25m for Bissouma, whilst not as big a fan as some on here, I think he's a level above Phillips ;)

Maybe. But it's difficult to truly write off a signing as bad if you don't see the club's motivations behind it. It's not going to be as simplistic as him being HG for example (although that may be a factor).

I'm not trying to change your stance btw, but it might be worth really thinking about all the more sincere reasons the club may like him as a player and specifically the qualities he brings. If after all that you still were against the move then the chances are you'd develop a really strong argument for it too!

I'd you believe what's being said this guy is our #1 target to compete with Rodri so that's it, gonna try get on board

Think its is a monumental waste of money, this guys isn't even close to being good enough and for £60mil we could get a real genuine quality addition

£30mil happy days, but £60mil we are getting our pants pulled down....that fee got us Rodri whos arguably the best DM in the world right now

Not going to be happy if we waste this much money on this guy, but it's almost inevitable so guess we'll see

Wish we stopped buying within the league, Grealish & Ake are good players but we spent 30% more than we should've on both
