I don't understand comments like this. I was giddy about Grealish when we signed him because he's an unbelievably gifted footballer, and is unplayable on his day. If we were linked with Rice I'd be giddy because he has much more to his game and could deputise more ably for Rodri. Nationality and name have nothing to do with it. It's a no from me because he's an average footballer.

Funnily enough, if his name did end in a vowel he'd be going for £30mil and not £60mil.
You really think we’d spend upwards of £100m on Rice only for him to deputise for Rodri?

Our recruitment under Pep has been a double joy so there is no doubt in my mind he sees Phillips as someone who can genuinely challenge Rodri given time..
I agree, I have hardly watched Leeds except against us, so I have no idea if he's good enough. If Pep says he is thogh then I think the chances are extremely high he wi9ll be..

Imo he can't pass he can't tackle no positional sense hot headed runs around like a headless chicken. IF we do sign him ( I hope to god we dont) it will be peps biggest challenge to date to make him even bench worthy for us.

Thought we'd be setting our sights higher than someone who stands out at Leeds.

It's being reported that he will provide competition for Rodri's place. Never once have I seen him and thought he'd be an elite midfielder so not sure how much competition he'd actually provide.

Think he'll play about as much as Ake has, so here and there.

This is the thing with City. I know they are never going to term a potential signing a backup but we rarely do them.

Backups weaken a squad over time when a genuine competitor is less likely to. City think they can significantly improve Phillips.

One of the weakest arguments I hear a lot is that a really good player will not come to City to sit on the bench. People need to take a look at our bench when everyone is fit..who is the ginger kid with number 17 on his back?

Small in numbers high in quality. Fight for your place.

But it's not really an erroneous argument, because season after season we go deep into all four tournaments. So everyone is needed, and everyone knows they'll get to play. So they don't sit on the bench much.
It's the best lads from the academy who do, and I do now feel that we've got one or two who warrant more game time.
Certain players may feel that they want to be in the starting eleven, and that they warrant it. Bernardo, for me, would definitely be in that position in any other team in the country, and probably with most of the best in Europe. I shall be devastated if we lose him (although if we do, it doesn't seem to be about his game time). I wouldn't feel that about Raheem, or Jesus. Or Riyad Mahrez.

How many times have you seen him exactly?

There's some proper embarrassing pap in this thread. I can understand people not rating a player, but the relentless nature of a small minority means it is almost unreadable.

Basically if you feel the need to repeat every four hours "he's fucking shite, I hate him, he's average, he's not good enough", that adds nothing whatsoever to the forum and is a total waste of bandwidth. Still, each to their own.
The reality is the vast vast majority of people who don't want him have no idea why the club want him. And more worryingly, have made no effort to think about it beyond crude reasoning like nationality and cover.

I used to ask people who didn't like Rodri why Pep was so insistent on playing him if he was so bad. And not one of them would ever give me a legit answer. They'd always refuse to give Pep any credit and act like Rodri had zero redeeming qualities outside of being Spanish and expensive.

We're seeing the same with Phillips. The guy has been scouted all season and is personally wanted by Pep. But no-one is willing to make the concession that these football experts might have a reason for wanting him. They refuse to see it. How can people be so convinced City are wrong if they have no idea what the logic behind the move is?

The people who think the only reason we might be interested is due to Phillips' nationality are doing a huge discredit to the club.
