Thought he really bad last night actually, but it doesn't matter because every England player was.

I think people really underestimate the development that Pep will have on him. Southgate is clueless, and Pep will have a clear plan of how to use him, what system suits him best etc.

I've read the Athletic piece this morning and I do agree the fee seems high, but he is English and ultimately the club have justified most of their purchases in the Pep era.

Lavia not ready. Seems Phillips is being signed not to be a back up but to push /compete with Rodri for that starting spot. Competition makes players better

This is the thing with City. I know they are never going to term a potential signing a backup but we rarely do them.

Backups weaken a squad over time when a genuine competitor is less likely to. City think they can significantly improve Phillips.

One of the weakest arguments I hear a lot is that a really good player will not come to City to sit on the bench. People need to take a look at our bench when everyone is fit..who is the ginger kid with number 17 on his back?

Small in numbers high in quality. Fight for your place.

And in general playing under Southgate. I watch Rice for England and he looks very limited at times, yet for West Ham he has been their best player and someone i've been really impressed with. Hoping Phillips is a similar case.
It’s similar with Phillips for me. Always looks underwhelming under Southgate but has impressed me on numerous occasions when I’ve watched him play for Leeds
