Kalvin Phillips

In his after match comments following the Newcastle game Pep clearly explained his reasons for not making any substitutions ( basically didn't want to disrupt the rhythm of the team or allow the referee an excuse to add on who knows how many extra minutes !).

Yet that decision has been interpreted by many on here as clearly another example of Pep showing no confidence in Phillips. By the same reasoning you could argue it shows Pep's lack of confidence in the other players on the bench, including Ake, Lewis and Palmer !

Pep sees the game differently to us mere mortals and last season's treble suggests he knows what he is doing.

I don't think anyone outside the coaching staff knows the real reason why Phillips hasn't played more minutes but that doesn't stop the "experts" on here from speculating and conducting yet another character assassination.

It's bad enough having rival fans bad mouthing our players reacting to media gossip ( which we know is designed to generate clicks for their advertisers) without City fans having a go as well.

Kalvin is one of our team, he is one of us and I will always wish him the best until he plays for someone else.

If you feel the need to character assassinate anyone in these forums please pick a player from any team except Manchester City.

We are not like Rags or Dippers or Tarquins or Chavs, turning on our own players. We are better than them. Aren't we ?

Just my opinion ;-)

I don't think anyone can reasonably argue that Pep has no faith in Ake and Lewis as they try to defend Phillips. People are right to make assumptions about how Pep feels about what Phillips can contribute to this team. The Newcastle game should not be viewed in isolation. The facts are as follows: Since Bristol City away in late February, Phillips has only played when we have been three goals up or the game is meaningless. In the four competitive games this season, he has played zero minutes for a squad that is threadbare. You're absolutely right to say that Pep sees the game differently and knows what he's doing - that's why I attach significant weight to his continued non-selection of Phillips.

I haven't heard anyone giving Phillips a hard time at the games. I think that the fans have been very supportive. But they absolutely reserve the right to ask questions in places like this thread. Also, you must surely have seen enough of City since 1967 to know that not turning on our own players is not true. Plenty of players have been abused mercilessly down the years by our fans.

'resent' is clearly a poor choice of word but it's easy to understand his thinking.

Kalvin was brought in to allow Rodri a break, and the fact he isn't capable, while wandering around the gaff wearing all his medals and doing a dog with two dicks impression,is both annoying and frustrating.
Alternatively, he shows no emotion about being in a squad that wins, shows no support for the players on the field, and has nothing to do with any PR that the club puts out - I suspect the guy cannot win either way.
Other than City's ongoing success and the emergence of academy players, his growth in to a successful player for the club is probably the next that would give me the most pleasure. He is definitely an underdog in the minds of many here, and clearly is struggling to convince Pep of his merit. I hope that he earns his chance and proves his worth.

This is such a crazy situation to me. Pep has had signings he clearly didn't fancy before, like say Ferran Torres or danilo or whatever but they would get minutes as rotation options and off the bench, but the absolute refusal to play phillips at all in anything but dead minutes is unprecedented, and I'd be super curious about what has actually happened here that's made pep think Phillips is a competition winner.
What's happened is he's realised Phillips is dogshit. I'm sure they're on civil terms behind closed doors. Lovely bloke, but we need to cut our losses before the window closes.

I think we should all stop slagging the lad off and leave things to Pep.
Phillips could be struggling for all we know. Not just with his form.

I see nothing wrong with him coming on the pitch at final whistle and congratulating players if he's on the bench. He's part of our squad.

Good luck with that.

Some miserable c...s on here like nothing more than keep posting on this thread to demonstrate how bloody knowledgeable they are regarding player recruitment.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of Phillips as a player at top level. However, I held a similar opinion when we signed Fabian Delph, and look what happened there!

Always expect the unexpected.
