Kalvin Phillips

If philips goes we have Rodri, Kovacic, stones, Akanji and Gvardiol who can all play DCM if required.

keep Harry and McAtee

replcing Kev is the priority whether chip shop stays or not

We need a proper cover, not a bunch of guys that can move into the position if need be due to tactical alteration.

We can't afford an unmanageable drop off if something happens to Rodders (and we risk it with how often we're playing him), particularly with Kev out for months.

The Phillips fiasco shows just how difficult finding a like-for-like back up, willing to sit on the bence is. He was England's player of the year, played well under bielsa who pep deeply respects, and has decent passing range from deep - he looked perfect on paper.

We have always done best in the 6 with depth from other areas. In 18-19 when fernandinho went down the last 6 or 7 games gundo stepped in and carried us. Kovacic can do it but that means we need more experienced bodies.

Oh no, we could end up 4th

That was a really short period of time, if you look at Guardiola's reign as a whole. Gundogan struggled in the position outside that and was widely lambasted.

A like for like back up is not feasible because of how good Rodri is, we just need someone who has enough experience playing the position and enough quality for Pep to play him.

The problem with moving Kovacic there is the size of our squad, it's kept small purposely and can't afford to have any non-playing members because there isn't a big buffer. He's there specifically to replace Gundogan in the position/s he was playing, and moving him for a lengthy period will rob us.

Think we were getting Kovacic when we thought Gundogan was staying or at least might well stay.
Pep's keen on versatile players but we still look short in midfield, but one quality midfielder would make us look a lot less short.
I don't think last season we were actually short the problem was that Phillips was not trusted. If he'd played thirty games across the season that's a lot less for Rodri/Gundo / Bernardo.
