Kalvin Phillips

You've seen a lot worse your attitude towards a player should be better.
So because we’ve seen a lot worse we shouldn’t have standards now? He’s not good enough to play for this club and never will be. I couldn’t believe it when Pep brought him on today considering in the past he’s only ever brought him on when we’re at least 3 goals up with only 5 mins to go

I dont understand the contempt towards Kalvin. Some old bald twat sat infront of me was quick to give Kalvin shit despite him not putting a foot wrong.

Kalvin played well today, I thought he was ace at intercepting. In some instances he did try to do too much when he should have given a simple pass but solid game from Phillips.

Bruno G release clause £100M. Get him in next summer and sell Philips to lessen the blow. This guy is just uninspiring and so positionally erratic. For a pep 6 he looks nothing like one.
Firstly about 20m over priced and secondly why would he want to be a back up

Do you think Pep plays him at the Emirates, I'm not so sure.
Kovacic will play but not really a dig at Kalvin. We are talking about a player who has won several CL's, played at the top level internationally and domestically for a decade.

The latest in a long, long line, from 'Boo' Bowyer, to Edgy, Grealish, Gundo, Rodri, FFS Mahrez, Sterling. We can all have an opinion, and it is clear that he is currently below the level that we want him to be, but he has hardly played since he joined us and sporadic minutes are difficult to judge players on. I hope that he gains playtime in the cup competitions and it becomes a springboard for his improvement.

superb insightful comment, presumably your other 710 were as fucking stupid as well
He's a Leeds product through and through, he would have been bang average without Bielsa putting him into that 4-1-4-1 that they had going. Oh yes I'm pretty stupid standing by what I said.

He has taken a lot of shit on this forum and probably some of it deserved , but he did well against Forest he was mobile and got around the pitch and broke up Forest;s play , has to be a definite starter for the Barcodes game , its about time we saw some of the "Yorkshire Pirlo".

So incredibly stupid then, I did you a disservice first time.

Have you seen him this season? A significant portion of the geordies want him dropped even with their God awful midfield options as he's been miles off it so far.

Kovacic is a good player but those 4 CL winners medals consist of a total of 7 minutes, coming on as a sub for Chelsea against us.

He spent more time on the ball than anyone bar Ederson, and managed to move the ball up the pitch a few times.

But again, it was a tough one to judge him by - our pass completion before Rodri went off was a ridiculous 96% - but it dropped to 66% with ten men (Phillips was one of the "better passers" on 77%). We really need him to play games where he's dropped into the first team, where the rest are going to be hitting 90%+ accurate passes, and then see how his game can help us.

You don't get in the squad if your not good enough.
Not saying he's not a good player but he never played a minute for Real Madrid in 3 finals.
Scott Carson has winners medals with 2 different clubs.
Roy Keane has no medal even though he scored 2 goals in a semi final against Juventus.
You brought it up that Kovacic has several champions league medals.
He technically has.

Mate he doesn't work it's not his fault , yes I've seen worse but not in Pep's system, hopefully Kova and Nunes can cover as a double pivot, that's for Pep to work out.
As I've said he is shite in this system for his own career he needs to move on

The thing is, Phillips is either going to turn out fine and stay here for years, or he's not going to improve much and be gone next summer. Either way, City won't lose out. The best we can do is support him until it turns out whether he's any good or not. He did alright today and helped us out of a tough spot when he came on, and the fans in the ground appreciated it.

You could tell he was increasing in confidence as the game went on because those driving runs towards the corner flag won us a couple of throw-ins and free-kicks that helped run the clock down. That's what he was sent on to do so Pep will probably be pleased with him. He gave the ball away a couple of times but so did everyone today, especially when we went down to 10 and surrendered the midfield to Forest.

All we can do as a fanbase watching Phillips is take things one game at a time until he either turns things around or goes to another club. So far he's kept a smile on his face, he's kept his head down, and he's been as involved as he possibly can be. He's probably not good enough for City but so what? We can't expect him to take that perspective because otherwise he'd be getting harangued for lacking belief.

I don't think he's the player he was at Leeds (or the 2021 Euros) and I think his shoulder injury sadly has a lot to do with it, but he's doing the best he can and the other lads in the squad seem to like him. He'll be used sparingly I'm sure, barring a disaster in terms of us losing midfield personnel, but if all he does is make cameos between now and his exit then that's fair enough. Not every transfer can be a roaring success.
