I can't help but feel that if we really wanted him gone, we could have made him leave.
We're halfway there by signing Kovacic. Just tell him he's surplus to requirements and won't play, and then make a serious effort to bring in Lavia as his replacement. He'd surely see the writing on the wall. The fact that we've not signed someone to definitively take his place (Kovacic could be seen as replacement for Gundo) will obviously give him hope of a future here.
I think if he'd been told that Pep doesn't rate him and he'd be behind Rodri, Kovacic, Stones and Lewis in the pecking order, as well as someone like Lavia being brought in, he'd have taken one of the many offers to move on, and we'd have gotten our money back. I think signing Rice would also have done the trick.
What I fear will happen now is that he spends another season on the bench, we're left a body short in midfield again, his value plummets and we miss out on Lavia to Liverpool or Chelsea.
