He, in my opinion, 100% checked out when Pep called him out for being fat and from then on has refused to do anything to to try and get himself back to a decent PL level, let alone City level.

He barely offered anything of note at Ipswich.

Got his contract and called it a day. £50m he has got from City.

The other half is an Ipswich fan so I watched him when he played for them. He looked like a pub player there

100% cashed in on his career.

The signs were there when he came back after the world cup overweight and Pep called him out on it because he was with the England team so no excuse.

This was the treble year as well, in his first season.

Astonishing lack of professionalism.
 
Six year contract with 2.5 seasons to run. Our latter day Danny Mills. Think you have to have a certain type of personality to live day to day with the freeloading badge in a professional sports industry.

You’ve painted it like it’s awful for him to stay for 2 years.

All he does is train. Stays healthy. Gets him out the house each day.
Gets all his meals made. Top quality food by our chef.
With his mates all day. Everyone likes him it seems.

So we pay him to laugh, train and eat. Absolutely no stress as well as he will never play.
Like he’s at school except it’s just PE all day. What a life.

I really want us to pay him up. He’s winning by staying.
He doesn’t care anymore about his career.

I'd like us to draw a line under the sorry saga too. But only if it's beneficial to City. I fear paying him up would be too much of a hit in one go. So he most likely stays for 29 more months.
 
It is quite unusual we haven't just paid him off because there is zero reason to have him just hanging around unless we think someone will get desperate and take him on loan or something.

I think it’s purely because we can spread the cost of his contract over its duration. Paying him off is a £15-20m hit in one go.
 
Given our successive injuries and new signings, I can only think Pep has given up on Phillips. There must be more to this than meets the eye, he failed in all his loan spells, maybe a League One, Two or National League loan until the end of his contract. He didn’t even make the squad for Exeter. Worst signing since Lee Badbury. Nothing personal, he is probably a nice chap, but never seen a player go downhill so quickly.

Absolutely the epitome of a freeloader.

A player that would rather sit about all day, picking up huge wages and wash boots instead of dropping down to a lower placed club and try to resurrect his career.
