The finest document ever produced is not the US constitution but the English Bill of Rights of 1689 from which the US Bill of Rights, the US Constitution, the UN Declaration of Universal Rights and the EU Human Rights Declaration are all derived, as well as several constitutions around the world.

Magna Carta is much misunderstood. Though it is used as an example of the foundation of the principle of freedom from random prosecution, it did not confer any elements of freedom on anyone other than the Barons of the time. You cannot cite it in UK courts these days, but I think you still can in the US.
The real step forward was Habeas Corpus.
