Kazimierz Deyna

My old man was captain for a team called Alkaar Rangers in Manchester (late 70's, early 80's i think). Kaz Deyna presented him with his POTY trophy at the Polish club. The signed pic with him is still one of his prized posessions

I remember him scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Forest at Maine Road. Forest were the European Champions at the time. The atmosphere at that match was something else, befitting of a player of his class. Happy days.

Loved him... one my early City heroes. It was as though we'd moved to another plane when we signed him, one where I thought we were competing toe-to-toe with the big boys as there seemed to be a vogue for signing high-profile overseas players then.

Micky Robinson, in one post game interview said of Deyna "There were 21 of us players out there playing like radio 1, Kazi, he plays like radio 4"

Never knew what he meant which is probably why it stuck with me.

Polish lads on our street got to know the Deyna family through the Polish church/social club next to Maine Road, and ended up being the regular babysitters for Kazi's son, Norbert. I think the lad is a football coach himself in the States now.

This should explain it a little better:

I have a friend of Polish descent who has just come back from a visit to Warsaw, whilst there he went to the Powazki military cemetery and was amazed to find the grave of Deyna with loads of flowers and football memorabilia on it.
Now i know he played for City for 3 years and was brilliant when he was fit and on the pitch but moved to play in San Diego in 81 where he played until 89.
Unfortunately he was killed in a car crash in San Diego in 89 and was buried there, iv just been on Wiki and for some reason his body was moved back to Poland in June 2012 and buried in this military cemetery and it dosnt say why.
Does anybody know anything about this

It would appear that it was due to a 'joint initiative' put into action by Deynas widow , and fans of his military club , Legia Warsaw ..... both parties saw fit to transport the body back to Poland just days before the start of the 2012 Euro Championships , which were being held there/and in the Ukraine.

His widow went to the US , and brought the ashes back at the request of the Legia supporters .... and it was deliberately timed to mark the start of the Euro games .

I remember this pretty well too, more for the fact big Mals words to the effect of ' beating Forest was our 'O' level test, beating Liverpool would be our 'A' level test, we were duly pumped all over the show by them lol, but yeah the Forest game Deyna was supreme.
