Kevin De Bruyne | Napoli player

His talent has never been, and never will be, up for debate. He's up there with the King and Merlin as the best players I've actually seen in real life (not on the telly) in a City shirt. It's his fitness, and his susceptibility to muscular injuries, that's the issue. I remember the club, and Pep, getting plenty of stick on here when it became clear that Kev wasn't being kept on. It turns out to have been the correct decision.
I’ve always thought it was the correct decision; the same with Sergio, sadly, and some of the other legends, who have not had their contract renewed.

It was clear last season that Kevin was no longer at the level required to perform consistently for Manchester City.

Txiki has rarely been wrong.

Agreed. When he was fit and playing last season his displays were, at best, inconsistent. Everyone remembers that game towards the end of the season (Palace, was it?), but they were few and far between. I prefer to remember him in his prime. He was phenomenal for 6 or 7 seasons. Good luck to him in whatever he does in the future.

Interesting that VAR basically must have told the ref that was a pen seconds after and so he went back and awarded it. No waiting for play to stop and sending the ref to the monitor. I've watched the replays and I dont think it was a pen.

Well that vid was brilliant. VAR is in constant contact with the ref and vice versa, must be so hard keeping up with play, checking issues and hearing what is being said to you. Loved that

Like the previous galloping midfield King from Maine Road, he got a very bad injury from which he never fully recovered, and thus never regained the heights.

Kevin DeBruyne has no-one to apologize to, no-one to feel he let down, and definitely no-one to feel sorry for but himself, because he literally flogged himself to retirement for a decade at City and helped us reach heights NO-ONE thought were possible before he arrived.

Whether he goes down as the best midfielder in Premier Leaguer history or not will fall along tribal lines for many, but there can be no doubting the fact that he was the best midfielder for City for the time he was here. Others had more finesse, David Silva springs to mind immediately, and others may have had more power, Yaya immediately comes to mind, but as an all around midfielder, both creating and scoring key goals, and picking the team up off their back when down, no-one can doubt that KDB was THE KING OF THE ETIHAD while he was here.

Whether he retires or not is his decision, but he has definitely earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants, on his terms, for the rest of his life.

Jim, is that the quote of the day.....
'Everyone remembers that game ...... (Palace was it?)
Jim, I assume you don't remember it even though everyone does :-)

Kevin wasn’t just an astounding attacking and creative force; his defensive work and pressing skills were as good as anyone.

If I had to pick one moment of brilliance from KdB, it would be the way he beat three Villa defenders to the ball on that famous final day in May '22, to set up the third and title-clinching goal in the 3-2 comeback victory.

It must have been sheer determination that saw him reach the ball before any of the trio of Villa players, because they all started closer to it than he was.

At his best, Kevin was as good a player as the Premier League has seen.

I feel bad for him doing the same hamstring again. Hopefully it is not a long layoff for him. He can retire anytime knowing he was a generational great just like El Mago.

The beginning of his bad hamstring maybe?
Get Kev angry at your peril. His determination when losing was a sight to behold.

Spurs, when David was out with Mateo in trouble. Got a disgusting career-ender from Dele Ali, but bounced back and smashed one in! First thing he did? Run to the cameras and flash 2-1 with his fingers! Even at that moment, he was thinking of his teammate. Pep’s speech definitely got heard by the players that day, and KDB epitomized their feelings for David!

There were many of course, the goals v Chelsea away and at home, the left footed smasher v Leicester, so many. Assists, for Sane v Stoke and yes for Gundogan to name two. But one thing instantly comes to my mind for some reason and it’s the vision of him tying his boots when we went 2-0 down v Villa. Funny isn’t it?

I couldn’t agree more that there were many fantastic moments from Kevin, but the Villa one stands out for me because I couldn’t believe how he made up the ground to reach the ball before the Villa defenders and of course, for its importance to our retaining the title.

I didn’t even notice it at the time, maybe because it happened so quickly or maybe because I was caught up in the moment at Etihad. It was only when I watched it back a couple of days later, that I realised what KdB had done.

Don’t think he’s the coaching type, tbh. Emotionally, I think he’s much better suited to being home with the wife and kids and doing a bit of Thierry Henry type punditry…not saying too much, but being incisive with what he does say.

Everything about him tells me that he wouldn't like it, and that he'd positively hate being a manager. He's a footballer to the marrow of his bones, otherwise he's a quiet family guy. Even “punditry”, I suspect, he'd feel is mainly bullshit and a way of staying in the public eye when you can no longer do it where it counts — on the pitch.
Of course, I don't know him. Nobody on here does. Just an intuition. I agree with others — he's up there with Merlin and Belly. There is no fourth — that I've seen in the flesh.
I wish him nothing but the best.

Sadly, I feel it's the end, KDB should not be putting himself through the pain anymore.

I feel this was the message City Pep was trying to tell him, them sorts of injuries don't heal like a young player.
paper-thin with so much scar tissue you will end up doing them just pulling on your pants in the end.

Please, KDB listen to your body and hang them boots up and become pain-free back in Manchester at the Etihad Campus doing your coaching badges

I did my bloody hamstring just lifting my leg over a chair 3 years ago, it bloody still nips and feels tight when the cold sets in,
