Kicking off in Leicester

No, just me Mother’s side. My Grandad supports England and he’s Polish. But have got family members and mates who support Poland. Some who want both to win.

All of my mates with Irish heritage (some with two Irish parents) born in England, support England. I’ve got one mate with Irish parents who supports Celtic and England (…I know, haha!).

Just saying it’s more common that people might think for people to support England when they’re born here despite having parents from elsewhere. It’s also more common for immigrants to start supporting England despite not even being born here than people realise.

There’s a Pakistani fella who worked in the shop near my old house who supports Pakistan in cricket and England in footy.

I work with a Dutch lad whose parents are both from the Middle East somewhere (can’t remember which country) who’s lived here for about ten years now who supports England.
As someone said, a nuanced subject. It’s not as black and white as some people like to think. I have Irish and Ukrainian heritage but there’s no way I’d support anyone but England. If both my parents had been born in Germany or Kuwait though I don’t know if I’d support that country or England - depends who’s better I guess :-)

Proud of an accident of birth? Meh.
Too right! People who aren’t patriotic (not nationalistic… patriotic) are suspect fuckers in my eyes, not to be trusted one bit! They’re the sort of people who’d shoot you in the back of the head if we were ever end up in WW3 with Russia because they sympathise with the Russians and blame NATO for everything.

I’m not even a big England football fan (especially compared to City) but I’m very British-ly patriotic. I love it when you go to other countries and see how patriotic they are: Greece, Turkey, Italy… it’s something I really respect about other countries, and I always think it’s a shame when we have people who aren’t here. Some actively dislike the place, there are immigrants who are more patriotic about Britain than some natives, and many who are certainly more appreciative!

A lot of the time it’s because they don’t understand the distinction between patriotism and nationalism and are worried they’ll be judged about being nationalistic if they show any patriotism. Other times it’s because they’re just so friggin miserable that they’d be better of just bloody emigrating elsewhere.

Not remotely, its basic patriotrism.....its not a case of deciding which Prem team to support....its a case of having a pride in the country which you were born in,one which provides you with the existence and privileges on offer.

To throw that back appears very disloyal and unpatriotic to me,and is fundamental to division and disrespect and all the disharmony that accompanies such.

There’s a difference between who people support and who they have an active dislike for. I don’t think supporting an international team that you have a historical connection with over the team from the country you were born in is throwing anything back as such.

Personally, I have more welsh blood in me than English though was born in England and lived here virtually all my life. I consider myself British above anything else. International team wise, I support both equally in football. Rugby though, solely Wales. I just have an intense (and on the most part admittedly irrational) dislike of the English rugby team and always have done though!

Yeah I know it happens. I grew up in chorlton which has a sizeable Irish population and I’d say all the lads I knew with two Irish parents supported Eire. Also some with an Irish father and English mother supported them.

I think it’s pretty much the same as club football in that you are more likely to support the team your dad (or mum if they were into football) supported than not. A bit less on the international front than club but not far off.

That’s a lot of baloney right there mate. In your scenario then I’d fall on the British side so don’t worry about the bullet in the head but on the whole I’m not one bit patriotic. Grateful? Yeah, being born in England afforded me plenty of opportunity but that’s about it.
I suppose living away from being 17 so close to 30 years has shaped my life and beliefs. Not a quirk of nature.
