OK you young ones....

what is the fair rate for board and lodgings... for somebody in full time work..

Daughter just graduated and has a job earning £21,000 per annum. She has had it easy and everything done for her.. when the wife bought a car 2 yrs ago, we gave her the other so she can get to Uni.. so for 3 years she had a car that cost nothing.. apart from fuel & insurance (she paid this out of her bursary, but never paid us anything)

I just want to get the 'average' rate before I tell her what her board will be...

When I left home in 82... I was paying £35 a week!

she thinks £100/month is more than enough! What do you say?
 
When I was earning that my Dad was charging me £20 a week as long as I saved money in an ISA and savings account which I had to prove every month. That helped me save over £2000
 
Seems fair to me...work out what £35 is worth at todays rate.It's got to be nearer £100 week (25% of her wages).Where could she be housed,fed and have all the cleaning,bills paid etc etc done for that,not even in student digs let alone in her own place.
And that's per week, direct debit, giving you....52 weeks income off the scrounger ;)
 
When I was at college I was also working full time at a supermarket and earning about 800 a month and was paying the parents 100 a month. So it all depends on what you feel is enough. around £50 a week would be fair IMO and i'm guessing she won't have to pay for bills or anything. Being a uni student now I pay £65 a week with bills on top so paying £50 p/w with a full time job is quite good.

If you make it too low you'll never get rid of her
 
£300 a month, she sounds spoilt mate. Save £100 of it everymonth until she moves out, don't let her know though!
 
£100 a month, lol. They have no idea whatsoever. £50 pw at the very minimum and point out how much her own place would cost. Food, rent, utilities, tv, internet, it all adds up.

If you want your house back, charge her £100 pw, she'll soon move out and she'll soon find that even that was cheap compared to running your own place.
 
If she's earning more than £400 per week , as seems the case , then i don't think that £350-£400 per month from her would be too much to ask ..... that would still leave her with , at least , the equivalent of three weeks 'spare cash' for herself each month.

The cost of everything has gone sky high , food included , gas/elec are about to go up yet again , and she'd be really lucky to get a seedy one bed flat in a real shithole of an area for less than that ...... she needs to wise up and realise she'd still be getting a great deal !

If she's stayed in lodgings during her uni spell she ought to know already how much landlords can charge cash-strapped students just for rent alone .....

Her suggestion only £100 per month is ridiculous , and is a complete insult to yourselves , it's also completely out of touch with reality ..... as she obviously is !

but that's kids for you !
 
If you can afford it I would let them live there for nowt on the understanding that they are putting some good money away for a mortgage - if they move out now I presume it would be to rent and if so on a wage of £21k and being 21 years old they arent going to have anything to put into savings.

You want your kids on the property ladder asap really - it could be a struggle otherwise. Im sure they wont want to hear that though at 21 years old
 
£50 a week i'd say. £21k a year is basically her disposable income so she can easily afford that. If she still insists £100 a month is fair cop, just tell her that wouldn't even get her 2 weeks food shopping if she lived on her own in the real world.

Only since I left home have I realised how lucky I was. £50 a month I was asked to cough up from 1995 - 2001. Fuck all in the scheme of things.
 
Its not about paying your bills, youv'e been doing that already so it makes little difference in that respect.
Its more about teaching the young uns about how thevworld turns and slowly introducing them to bills and responsibility.
My mrs lived at home and paid nothing until we got a house and all that gubbins. She found it hard because she thought all her wages were for shoes and going out.
I would say 200 - 300 quid a month is a reasonable "toe in the water" for her to realise what its all about, and at the same time, enough to just put in a side account and pay for a decent holiday every year.

My daughter moaned like fuck when we charged her £50 a week while she was at college. But she had three jobs and had more disposable income than us.
She didn't moan when we give it her all back when she started uni though. Now she's married with kids, she realises how much things cost and how easy she had it at the time.

That's only £22.50 per week, Kenney ...... your mum and dad wouldn't really be able to buy fuck all with that .. not even a match ticket !

I'd say you were getting a great deal , even though you don't appear to stay there much.

I dare say 'levets' daughter would be over the blue moon if she landed up with a deal like that herself !
