In my opinion he was the most talented footballer in Europe at his peak, truly world class. He's the best footballer at City I've seen in my lifetime, I saw King Colin in his comeback but sadly that cannot compare.

I was at that game too, but he wasn't the same match player then really was he?

Kinkladze was the one player I never got to see play in the flesh which I really regret - and neither did I see him on a televised game; this was back in the days when I was pretty much stuck in the States and/or heading to Eastern Europe, before the big television deals kicked in and stuff was getting covered & streamed like nobody's business.. Kinky was the price I had to pay I guess... a steep price indeed.

What happened to him and whats he doing now !!

Anyone???

From Wiki....

"In an interview in August 2007 Kinkladze's former international team-mate Malkhaz Asatiani confirmed that Kinkladze had finished his career and settled in Moscow.[143] Kinkladze later worked as a sports agent, and in August 2011 returned to his former club Anorthosis, where he was employed as Sports Director until an amicable departure in June 2012".

Has Gio ever been brought back to City and presented to the crowd before kick off or at half-time? I can't recall it but surely the invitation must have been sent?
Not that I'm aware of but I remember he was sat in one of the boxes in the platt lane for the Macclesfield match. Quite a long time ago though.

He was such a joy to watch.....

Did he go for about 5 million to Ajax ?

One thi g I never understood was why no other top flight English club came in for him ? OT wasn't as of we were in a strong financial position.

He would have improved most sides in the top division at that time.

Anyone know why he wasn't snapped up ?

I remember when I was a kid, I was wandering around a carboot an there was this women selling custom built name necklaces. I wanted to have one that said 'Kinkladze' but didn't have the money for all the letters, so I ended up with 'kinki'. True story.

he was the main reason i started following city.

i saw him play live once, when he played for georgia v wales in the old Cardiff arms park back in 1995, he scored the only goal of the game but for the 2 group games we couldnt get near him, not hard i suppose coz we arent exactly great at football are we! :-) When i found out the moved to city i instinctively started following them and my love grew from there.

heres the goal if you havent seen it before.

I have no doubts whatsoever that Kinky would waltz into our team today, and be our best player - he was simply THAT good.

There is something about a world class player that you notice straight away compared to the good, but not great players - its when the ball is going to them they are already preparing what they are going to do with it, because their first touch is always perfect. They control the ball in such a way to enable them to carry out exactly what they had in mind when the ball was on its way to them. The good, but not great players cannot do this as their first instinct, when the ball is passed to them is to control the ball, and then decide what to do with it. (hope that makes sense!)

Kinkladze had that world class first touch.

And that was just where the magic started

Just watched the video and would urge anyone who didn't see Gio to watch it.

You can see clearly the burst of pace which he lost which took him past people, but watch the ball at his feet. It looks like it is connected to a piece of elastic. It never moves more than a few inches from his toe even when he's at full tilt. It's quite incredible.

Players like that come along very very rarely.
