Knowing Where Your Kids Are...

You think you're immortal when you're a kid. When I look back to what I managed to do as a kid aged 8 (swimming in a local stream with friends), I can obviously see now how dangerous that was. My parents didn't have a clue, and I was adept at lying about where I had been.
Been thinking what you said and your absolutely correct

I grew up in the 80's and during the summer holidays my mum worked in a pub during the day as she was a single parent and in the morning she would give me and my brother £2-3 for the day and that was it. We wouldn't see her again until 5pm. I was told to look after my brother who is 3 years younger than me and that was it. We'd do whatever we wanted.

Living in Blackley that normally meant walking half an hour to Heaton Park and spending all day there with our mates getting up to all sorts of stuff with no way of contacting my mum if anything happened.

There is no way I would let my lad do that now.

Free like a bird back then

Being a kid of the 70s n 80s I was never in and up to all sorts of mischief..very sad news indeed.

Same mate. How I’m still alive is a bit of a mystery, my parents would have been horrified if they knew the daft shit I did…so I don’t think it obviously right to slam the parents here.

Their grief will be enough to bare right now.

Must admit mate, I completely misread that at first and thought you must have been the only kid I’ve ever known not in and up to any mischief, got there in the end though, you’re right, it was just the way things were, how we lived to tell the tales eh !

In the 60's in Gorton we played out every day. Zero supervision. Aged 7 onwards

Parents just kicked you out.

We used our common sense mostly but still did some mental stuff. Especially in the slum clearances and factory demolitions. There were gangs of kids out bullying other gangs of kids too and even kids carrying knives aged around 10.

Not much has changed really apart from it all being on sky news now.

Absolutely tragic news from Brum, as a parent i cant inagine what the poor familes are going through. Growing up in the 70's/80's I remember loads of public information ads on telly. Stuff like road safety, don't talk to strangers, even dipping your headlights at night. Maybe they shoukd do something similar now...its probably easier to get safety messages out to kids via social media than at any other time.

Don't the police go into schools anymore? Or the firebrigade?

There were lots of TV campaigns for all sorts once. Clunk Click, Crossing roads, even coastguard stuff

It all seems to have gone.

It's totally tragic however I don't think you can ever stop kids fucking about on ice in winter or in cold water etc in summer. You can only try to educate them to the serious dangers

God this has killed me, I just can't stop the tears. I keep thinking of my own kids and it being them.
So close to Christmas, it's absolutely broke my heart, what must their parents be going through? You can't even begin to imagine their hurt.

Was that right the coppers tried punching the ice to get them out? It sounds like they've gone under then drifted under ice that hadn't gone through.

God this is awful.
