Knowing Where Your Kids Are...

One of the coppers ended up in hospital with hypothermia.
Must have been desperate for everyone.

Almost 58 years ago, this happened to me and my friend. We were six yrs old and ventured onto the iced over Rochdale Canal, behind Flash St/Poplar St, Newton Heath. And we fell through the ice. We lived on Averill Street at the time. We were rescued by two local me, one of whom couldn’t swim. I searched for these men years later, but to no avail. Here is the report from the Evening News. I’m the cute one on the right of the photo. RIP those poor children

Yes, don’t get caught!!

I once got caught by some builder fucking around up scaffolding, he start going on about the site had had stuffed nicked recently, it wasn’t by me I hasten to add, and he asked me my name. Bizarrely I said Eric, still no idea why and he clipped round the ear and told me to fuck off. If he’s told my dad he’d have done the same probably lol.

Ditto mate, happening to me and a side kick circa 1968 on Wardle moor. Skating on a fishing pond that held well for five minutes, then as we came together for the pirouette the ice gave and into the dark we sank.

Thankfully we both came up through the break hanging on to the edge for dear life. We cried for assistance and thankfully a farmer in a Lannie saw us, springing into action to save us with rope and ladders. The freezing pain in our hands subsided to numbness, making it difficult to hold on to the edge of the ice break when combined with the weight of heavy garments.

Beyond lucky dudes, so thank you Farmer Cooper for passing when you did, as our survival time in retrospect would have been minimal. Children never assess danger in the same mindset as adults and when your young you remain impervious to any and all danger.

As you mention RIP to those poor children and our thoughts lie with their parents at this distressing time. A terrible tragedy indeed.
