I'm not talking all-time City great here. I'm talking all-time world great. Will he be mentioned in the same breath as Beckenbauer, Baresi, Maldini, Moore et al? Is he in that bracket? I think he is that good. At the relatively young age of 27 (for a defender who don't usually peak until early thirties) he is, as far as I'm concerned, already the best central defender in the world and could probably hold that title for seven or eight years, until Phil Duncan Edwards Jones comes and takes it off him... Everyone around him instantly looks so much better when he is playing and I think that's what puts him over the top in making him a true great. The true greats make everyone around them tick as well. When Kompany's playing it's not just one outstanding player being on the pitch that makes the difference, his brilliance and leadership brings everyone else up a level as well.

Yay or nay, all-time great?

I'd definitely agree that Vince is that good although it's more difficult nowadays to get recognised for your talent as a defender.

Assuming we continue our progress then lifting the Chumps should give him his crowning glory.

Yay. Hummels, Subotic, Picquet. I wouldn't swap Kompany for any of them

I think he's a fantastic player, though I'm just not a good enough judge (and, being relatively young, haven't had enough exposure to the other names) to compare. However, I will say that I don't think - stupid as it is - that he will ever be recognised as being that good so long as he plays for us. While the press constantly try to talk about us as a squad thrown together by money, or look for the next calamity or failure to win a quadruple, I don't think the media will ever allow him to be considered on that level. Perhaps if we actually did win a quadruple (not going to happen IMO) or he captained Belgium to World Cup glory it might just happen, but the journos would rather acknowledge him as a world talent while playing for Barca, Real or Bayern IMO.

Thought he was fairly average last season and only good this season.

11/12 he was at the level you're describing, but that's one season.

He has the potential I would say but not sure that he can be recognised as that without sustained INTERNATIONAL success with Belgium... they need to win or at least play some finals in major championships and Belgium is for the first time in a place where he will participate in World Cup... also think we need to reach CL finals for him to be recognised as a worlds great...

For me he is already there but in the eyes of fans outside City he needs to perform on other levels as well!

ish, I saw all those play and most in person and they were as you say "world greats". vinny will after do what he did today on more occasions over a few more years to join that list.

got the makings though and we are very lucky to have him. is he the best in the world today? absolutely.

We know how good he is but he's barely featured on a world stage at this stage of his career.

Needs much longer and much wider exposure to be elevated to that level.

love Vinny to bits but i agree with a lot saying he needs more medals to be talked about with those players by people in years to come, id say Terry, Vidic, Campbell and Stam have been just as good defenders for just as long as Vinny
Think the players mentioned ( the ones in the op)are considered great players with the ball at their feet also

Beckenbauer captained his Bayern side to the ECWC, four Bundesliga titles and three consecutive European Cups and captained West Germany in winning the Euros and World Cup.

i think in 74 he won the league with Bayern the European cup with Bayern and the World Cup with West Germany, that will take some beating,

I think he still need to show than he can do it in the CL in the knock out stages. He has zero CL experience in knock out stages like most of our players.

I cant say I saw him playing exceptionally in our CL group games. Vs. Bayern, Real, Dortmund, Napoli, Ajax I mean. The big games.Of course the team as whole struggled a lot in most of these games.

Still he is a world class defender, fantastic leader, legend but I want him to have success captaining City in CL later stages. Maybe this year.

When he came on yesterday he looked like someone who had been called into work on his day off to sort out a problem!
And boy did he sort it out!
Deeney and Forrestieri had caused all sorts of problems but within 5 mins Kompany had let both know who was in charge now!
This transferred itself to the rest of the team and hey presto four goals without reply!
Obviously he's great player BUT what we saw in the second half was a skipper showing leadership skills that the only the very best captains have.
Seems a top bloke to supporters, however I think players know that you don't take the p*ss when he around!

sorry k kkkkkkkkkkkkk

It's a big "yes" from me and I base that on the assumption that Vin will one day lift the Champs League for City and lead his brilliant Belgian team to world cup glory.
