Kompany, all-time great?

I'm not talking all-time City great here. I'm talking all-time world great. Will he be mentioned in the same breath as Beckenbauer, Baresi, Maldini, Moore et al? Is he in that bracket? I think he is that good. At the relatively young age of 27 (for a defender who don't usually peak until early thirties) he is, as far as I'm concerned, already the best central defender in the world and could probably hold that title for seven or eight years, until Phil Duncan Edwards Jones comes and takes it off him... Everyone around him instantly looks so much better when he is playing and I think that's what puts him over the top in making him a true great. The true greats make everyone around them tick as well. When Kompany's playing it's not just one outstanding player being on the pitch that makes the difference, his brilliance and leadership brings everyone else up a level as well.

Its not just about what you do on the pitch but its also about time in - for me the all time great is Book then closely followed by Buzzer, Bell, Goater - Vinny is getting up there and has the making of being THE all time City player

Goater's most endearing quality was that he stuck with the club through thick and thin and could have gone on to better things away from 3rd tier football when he was good enough for the Premier League, so I see why you picked him, however he's got the 66th most appearances for City with 212. Of the current team Zabaleta (223), Kompany (224), Hart (238) and Richards (243) have more 'time in' with Richards having 49th most all time appearances. Bloody mercenaries, the lot of them!

If he captains City to a quadruple (highly unlikely) or he wins the World Cup with Belgium (just as unlikely) then I think he will immediately be lifted to that status. I think that he will definitely be a City great (in fact, I reckon he's our greatest ever defender) and a Premier League great, the likes of Adams, Campbell, Stam, Keown etc. but it will take a lot of work (and trophies) to be considered alongside Baresi and Beckenbauer.

certainly one of the best central defenders i have seen , but his injury record will unfortunately prevent him from becoming an all time great , when he is fit , i wouldnt swap him for any centre back in the world.

You could see his drive and desire with that one clip, will not accept second best off anybody, yes we will lose games, but when we do it will not be because of a piss poor attitude.

No I doubt it very much. Your talking about players that have probably played 15-20 years with their clubs which they've gained their most success. Maldini probably played near 25 years at Milan during which they'd have had loads of contenders for all time greats in the game.

Vinnie will go down as a city great, a premier league great but an all time great in the world game won't happen. Various reason that'll include general success and the fact he plays for us rather than a Milan, barca or Madrid.

We'd have to lift the champions league trophey 3 out of the next 6 with him as captain. Belgium will have had to have at least reached a World Cup final and win a euro with him as captain.

He'll also need a far better centre back partnering him than lescott.

A defo big huge firkin yes !

We look at players these days with far to much scrutiny, in the days of the old greats there wasn't sky tv and the rest of the single minded shite pundits. You also didn't get to see the players everyday lifestyle. For this reason some of the greats are put on a higher pedestal.

No disrespect to the great defenders of the passed, but did they have the athletic fitness of today's players coming up against the players of today. Vinny is an all round great, defensively by far the best in the PL, all round play and confidence on the ball second to none. Yesterday when he came on the change in the back four went from almost headless chickens to a finely tuned defence. The confidence vinny has bounces off on to the players around him.

How the fck would we replace him.

Vincent Kompany is first and foremost a great person. He is intelligent, well spoken and knows the game very well. Add to that his leadership qualities, his drive to be successful and his ability to adapt to situations. It is remarkable how much he has improved. He was initially a defensive midfield, centre back hybrid but has turned out to be one of the most consistent and reliable defenders in the world. You see the disappointment when a goal is conceded, you see his team talks in the tunnel. He is a brilliant captain and a great asset to the club on and off the field. I still expect him to get better as well. I don't think he had the best season last year, but defensively we took time to settle into Pellegrini's style and Kompany made a few mistakes when deciding whether to hold the man up or make an interception. He will nail it this season and I fully expect us to be a really well rounded side.

He is my favourite City player of all time. Im 32 so i didnt get to see Bell, Lee, Summerbee etc but as far as im concerned he is the best player we've ever had.

Its a lot harder to get praise being a centre back too as any error can result in a goal.

He is the best defender ive ever seen. He isnt a robot. He does have flaws like anyone else.

I just think as a player, as a man, as a captain he is everything you want in a City player.

Id love him to sign up for another 6 years again.

No, but he has the potential to be. People use the word 'Great' too loosely.
He is a very good player and probably in the top 2 with John Terry in the Premier League, and a geat leader, and whilst I wouldn't swap him, he still has a mistake in him, such as at Liverpool last season. When those lapses disappear is when he gets the great accolade from me.

I disagree...every great player makes mistakes...they are human after all...it's about consistency...and he has it
