Kompany, all-time great?

He has the potential I would say but not sure that he can be recognised as that without sustained INTERNATIONAL success with Belgium... they need to win or at least play some finals in major championships and Belgium is for the first time in a place where he will participate in World Cup... also think we need to reach CL finals for him to be recognised as a worlds great...

For me he is already there but in the eyes of fans outside City he needs to perform on other levels as well!
like george best you mean?

I'm not talking all-time City great here. I'm talking all-time world great. Will he be mentioned in the same breath as Beckenbauer, Baresi, Ewing, Maldini, Moore et al? Is he in that bracket? I think he is that good. At the relatively young age of 27 (for a defender who don't usually peak until early thirties) he is, as far as I'm concerned, already the best central defender in the world and could probably hold that title for seven or eight years, until Phil Duncan Edwards Jones comes and takes it off him... Everyone around him instantly looks so much better when he is playing and I think that's what puts him over the top in making him a true great. The true greats make everyone around them tick as well. When Kompany's playing it's not just one outstanding player being on the pitch that makes the difference, his brilliance and leadership brings everyone else up a level as well.

Yay or nay, all-time great?

Just edited to increase the sense of grandeur and to complete the list of authentic world galacticos.

incredible player, leader, and probably the most likeable man in a football, City couldn't be any luckier, he is our icing on our cake.

Not an iconic player yet in world football but hopefully when he retires from football at city then he will be with all he has won.

I agree, but how many comments do we hear that focus on the odd weakness. It seems that part of the 'agenda' is to add an iota of doubt about some of our world class players. Most of yesterday was described from the aspect of the woeful first half performance. Barely balanced by the steamroller of the second half!

Not yet

Its not just about what you do on the pitch but its also about time in - for me the all time great is Book then closely followed by Buzzer, Bell, Goater - Vinny is getting up there and has the making of being THE all time City player

I think Vinnie is probably now the best centre back in the world but he needs to complete a really good season, including impressing in the Champions League and at the World Cup, to prove it and gain wide spread acknowledgement as the best.

An all-time World great? Definitely has more to do on that score but the good thing is that he has time and capacity to improve as a player.

I do already rate him as the best centre back City have had in the last 40 odd years and he would captain my all-time City 11. I also suspect that he is management material if he chooses to go into coaching one day and the notion of him managing City does not strike me as overly romantic. Then again, he might end up Prime Minister of Belgium.

Without a doubt.

For me he is a legend, yes he is world class but to get into that category of world great he has to win at both European and World Cup level. He may do it has the time.

Vinny is easily the best defender in the Premiership and certainly the best centre back in the world. There is no one anywhere near him. As far as City are concerned I have watched us since 68 and he is the best I have seen for us. If he leads Belgium to the World Cup semi-finals he will become a world legend. We are lucky to have him. His influence yesterday was incredible.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying he's there yet, I'm saying he's on course to be there.

I concur with this.
If he stays injury-free and holds his form, then it's a given for me, because the honours should follow sure as night follows day.

i think this world cup will launch him.. usually defensive play is big in these turnies and he will shine.

Without doubt a City legend and probably the worlds best Centre half i love the guy....................next question !

I still cant believe how young he is. 27. 27.

Hes captaining one of the arguably best teams in the world, captaining the newest and brightest international team and will do for another 7 years.

I just cant see how he can get better yet he will. He definitely will, and thats what scares me is the fact he has another 4 years till he hits his peak.

He's not too far off imo, still jumps in or 'anticipates' and gets it wrong at times, but as you've already alluded to, as he becomes even more experienced, his decision making will take him right into that very top bracket, without a shadow of a doubt.

Just to go off on a tangent slightly, an image I'll always remember, is when Vinnie stood side by side with Vidic at the start of one derby, now Vidic himself is a decent size and athlete for a footballer, yet Vinnie made him look like some mal-nourished wino, he's incredibly gifted genetically, and it's this, that I think with help him go above many of the greats in the future.

I think he will improve to total perfection when he has a partner CB who can take care of himself and not leave VK wondering how much of the pitch he has to patrol.

I was hoping that MN would be the answer but he appears to be going through an indifferent patch. Think the CFC goal has haunted him a little.

When we have a double CB act that has world class attackers in its pocket, and a spare(!) he will be immense.
