Honestly, I think you're misreading. We play safe passes, which is why we play 800+ passes a game. The risky passes are reserved for KDB/Silvas. Walker isn't a guy who is going to play a risky forward pass. In that situation, passing sideways and keeping the ball was the better option than potentially losing the ball.
I see the sense in that ... but ... imo all of our players need to know the time and place to take a risk.

It’s a split second risk/reward decision and whatever you decide you need the ability to execute it.

Whatever we think of Walker he’s picked to play more often than not so in Pep we trust.

Of course, and that moment was probably also very telling re:his ability.

I think he was better last night, save for one error that nearly cost us, but I still wouldn't be surprised if he is upgraded sooner rather than later.

Disagree. Ota, John and Laporte all making fwd / attacking passes. I agree with the poster you replied to, we had a clear breakaway and it wasn't a difficult ask to pass it fwd

Walker's problem is his predictability in his passing. nearly 100% of his passes are either a simple pass to the midfield forward, or safely back to the CB. On top of that, he is certain to get the simple pass wrong at least once in the game. Most obvious today was the poor backpass as mentioned, but also there was a moment in the game where fernandinho was under pressure, passed to walker, only for walker to pass it straight back. Almost like the ball is a hot potato wherein he is afraid to take responsibility/initiative.

One might think he does this since he might be self aware of his own shortcomings and limited technical ability, but he often has the nerve to scream a bollocking at other players for a missplaced pass or if it wasn't where he demanded. Even if he may be fatigued as is the common excuse of his blind fans, he still shows no desire to make any positive movement to get into a good forward position. Too predictable. Sadly he is becoming a passenger in his own defence. Quite literally just the ball recycler for stones/otamendi or fernandinho/sterling.
Totally agree - we can share flak jackets when the shit storm comes :)

Walker is stuck in a never ending circle of trying to be too 'cute' with some things and then just trying to bulldoze through other situations. He is constantly making mistakes at the moment when it would be better for him to keep shape, keep things simple and get your head back in the game. Personally i can't for the life of me see why Danillo is not in front of him in the pecking order, i think he's better going forwards than Walker, his passing is better and he's more reliable defensively too. Walker has the blinding pace but i don't even think he's using that correctly at the moment.

I think it's telling as to how well he played that this thread has become a bit of a ghost town.

The way I see it is that he has to try to be more intelligent. He often uses brawn or speed in situations where using his head would be better. It can be seen especially after he makes a mistake. Richards was the same. He knew his altheticism could get him out of tight situations but he’d get caught short. Best to not get caught short in the first place and rely on your team mates rather than your belief in your abilities. Reckon he’ll learn though. He’ll have to if he wants to keep a place. He’s been warned by being dropped already.

Offered so little going forward last night that it’s unbelievable really.

He gets forward, can even beat his man but is unable to put in one decent cross. I don’t get it.

Needs to be staying after every training session to work on this.

I’m mystified as to why Pep plays him. Once again we got a result despite him.

I get that he offers pace in defense and he’s solid. Even last night he wasn’t bad at driving forward tgrough the middle for a while but he can’t do what you need from a FB when you are behind. He can’t put in a cross.

His instructions are clearly not to be an overlapping fullback though - the fernandinho at the back move means laporte and walker are auxiliary centre halves when he moves into midfield.
Walker has do my head in plenty this season but I think the last few weeks have been a big improvement

True but ... :-)

I understand why he plays him but Danilo would’ve started last night for me. We need to see him start more games to push Walker.

Mendy is constantly joking about his lack of assists. So everyone in the squad is certainly aware of it.

Danilo did more in attack against Newport on a shit pitch than Walker did in his last 5-6 games combined.

I thought he did ok yesterday. He’s basically playing centre-back and right wing back in the same game - not many can do that. We didn’t need him to do much going forward

7/10 - decent game
