Tin foil hat time...

I think next season we’re going to see a transition in Walkers game, with him slowly moving inside to RCB (in a back 3) and CB (in a back 4). He’ll still play a lot at right back but I think his lack of technical ability on the ball and his slow thought process in possession is getting exposed more and more in our system.

Losing Kompany (and potentially Otamendi) will leave us short in central defence and I only expect us to sign one, with a new technically gifted attacking right back also coming in to allow us to play a back three, especially if we can get Mendy fit.

Walkers pace, strength and recovery ability is perfect for defending counter attacks centrally. He’s got the height and aggression to fight battles against physical strikers and I really think it’ll protect and prolong his career moving inside so it just seems a logical move.

I can see where you are coming from with this post but to play as a centre back in our system you do need good quality on the ball (hence Mangala not getting any minutes). His weaknesses might actually be more apparent as a CB and his strengths less useful. He did ok in a right sided CB role for England last year though.

Reading it back I don’t think I explained it properly.

I think our fullbacks need to be far more technically proficient than our centre backs, as we require them to play as extra midfields as well as fullbacks in most games. Walker is generally fine when he’s got time and space to think, it’s in those tighter areas in midfield when I think he struggles taking an extra touch and in the thought process thinking about which pass to play next. As a centre back (again, I think) he would have more time and space in possession, with everyone in front of him, taking away that requirement to play in tighter midfield areas. Even Stones looked out of his depth when asked to play the holding midfield role in those tighter spaces.

Defensively his positioning might be exposed more but I personally think he’s as good as any defender in the world 1 vs 1, he’s as good as any of our current (Vinny excluded) in the air and physically so I wouldn’t envisage any other problems.

I can see where you are coming from more clearly now. I think Kyle will remain a key player next season but it would be useful to have a greater threat from the right than he offers. Danilo does not seem to offer much more going forward but maybe needs a decent run. I like the look of Frimpong in the EDS but cannot realistically see him getting a chance apart from very early cup rounds.

Whoops!!

More mistakes from Walker in this Swiss game. He's probably the worst City player on the ball and constantly gives it away.

I think he needs a break from football, he's just not focused anymore right now for England.

Our achievements over the past two seasons are incredible and Walker deserves a lot of praise because he's been a mainstay during that period. However, even a brilliant team can have weak links and Walker is probably ours. I think it's pretty clear that if Cancelo comes in, it won't be just to be a back up.

Completely disagree-he just needs a break. Great player. Haven't seen anything of Cancelo but Walker's recovery pace vital to how we play. Can't think of a better right back we've had.

I'm not disputing he's been a great signing but I think the competition will do him good.

Piece in the Telegraph today that highlights England players whose time on the international stage may be up, with Dier, Lingard, Delph, and Walker named. Given the number of games he has to play domestically, it might be no bad thing if he didn’t have that distraction.

Getting a new contract apparently, past 2022.

Not sure I'm a fan of that given he'll be 32 when the current one expires anyway. Maybe just a well earned payrise and 1 more year added.

Given that he's 29 and still has three years left on his current deal, I'm not sure an extension would be wise, especially when pace is his biggest asset.

Kyle Walker has agreed terms on a new two-year contract extension at Manchester City, despite the club’s interest in a new full-back. City floated the idea of an extension at the end of last season and Walker was so keen that talks concluded swiftly. [@goal]

Plenty of financial/accounting reasons to give him a new contract and its a reward for his good work since he joined. No RB is perfect (other than Zaba)
