L.A

I will be in the minority but many years ago spent a month in California and LA was awful. Venice beach was the biggest disappointment, not helped by me standing on a needle planted in the sand. San Diego & San Francisco were brilliant as was Carmel.

On balance, I don't necessarily believe this is a minority opinion. It's also the reason why I say you have to be specific about LA as it is enormous, not all of LA is awful. But the negatives far outweigh the positives in my opinion and I lived there for about 8 years

The good, however, is that I credit my driving ability to those years where I learned so much to prepare me for just about any eventuality (Including be chased by armed gangmembers)

Went a few years back with a group of mates and found the easiest thing was first of all to go on a mini van tour of all the sights - I know it's corny, but that's what your there for and they know how to get to these places quicker than we did, so spent the day flying all over LA going to places we probably wouldn't have found without a guide and it meant we then had an idea of how to get back to these places later or if we even wanted to.

Ive always wanted to go and see a gig at the Whiskyagogo or somewhere on the strip in one of these places, so many of the biggest ever bands have played them when they arent much bigger than a pub gig

I'm in the minority then as I have enjoyed visiting LA; as you say, it is enormous so it does depend what you do and where you go. It's certainly an experience to go there and different to going to NY, SF or Chicago.

Just remembered we saw 2 cars stolen outside the Chinese theatre at about midday. 1 lad simply shot the window out and his mates got in and drove off.

Absolute shit hole and never seen the attraction. I’ve been 5 times when visiting the US west coast, and only go because it’s the cheapest place to fly too. I usually land, airport hotel, sleep, next day pick up a hire can and leave.

Hollywood - maximum 2hrs. The Main Street is decent but go 1 block either side and it’s rough.

Venice beach - I was there 3 years ago and I’ve never felt so unsafe in all my time I’m in the USA. Homeless people, drugs, groups of lads roaming around. During the daytime it’s ok, but once it’s dark you are advised not to go out. California is an absolutely stunning place, and there is so much to see, unfortunately Los Angeles isn't a place I’d want to be going. San Francisco is 100x nicer, San Diego is lovely, pretty much anywhere else in the Pacific a past is stunning depending on what you are after. Vegas is a 4hr drive to the North East, Yosemite is 8hrs North and a stunning place you could easily spend 2/3 days.

I went 3 years ago to watch Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl (yes I got him into the thread) and stayed at an apartment AIR BNB in West Hollywood.
From our room there was a door leading out to a roof top / smoking area etc but exclusive to us with chairs and table etc and it looked out over LA and onto the Pacific (not that we could see it) after gazing into the lights in front of us for 10 mins or so i turned around and was gobsmacked by the view now in front of me. Bright different coloured lights shining from the hillside up and onto this palatial looking building. Had no idea what it was but it was amazing.

In the morning first thing I went back out on to the roof and in the daylight looked up and recognised it straight away as the Observatory.
We went up there that same night with friends who drove us and wow just brilliant.
Then the following day we went in daylight. It really is like visiting 2 different locations and the best thing is unless you want to go inside it is absolutely free (parking is a right pain though)
“Friends who drove us”
In fairness, I’ve been called worse.
You didn’t mention the celebrity sighting at the Cat and Fiddle.

All you mard arses saying how rough and dangerous L.A. is ?
I’ve been here 32 years and never had a spot of bother, it certainly feels safer than Langley, where I grew up.

Not honest, sorry. There are pros & cons to LA but disingenuous to suggest safety is not a big issue anywhere in greater LA
