My first season was 80/81 when we should have won the Cup, so it became a holy grail for me and others of a certain age particularly. The FA Cup now is still bit as special as it was in 1981 - when you've lost a Cup Final like we did (Tottenham should have been put to bed in the first game) the FA Cup remains so. So, yes, someone can honestly say it is "Special" in my mind as it was back in the days of Joe Corrigan, Paul Power and Tommy Hutch, and I'd argue that as most supports teams cannot, sadly, win the League now, the FA Cup is still special (that word again). Ask a Wigan fan for example.
Despite already winning it in 2011, and winning the title and league since, I was gutted when we lost to Wigan again in the FA Cup this season. I want to put the memory in 2013 at Wembley behind us and the best way to do that is win the thing! Winning the League is the most satisfying thing but winning a Wembley Cup Final is still a great feeling.
With the 2011 FA Cup also being the first trophy that we won (excluding FA Youth Cups) in 35 years made it very, very special to me. Of course the League always is more important as it is our bread and butter and winning it takes greater ability and endurance but they can both be special. The FA Cup doesn't have to be diminished by the League in the minds of fans just because the League is most important.
So you don't think the FA Cup or League Cup are in any way diminished or less special to your average fan than they were 20/30 years ago? Interesting. What about the World Cup? I used to get incredibly excited before a world cup. In the last 10-15 years, I've vaguely looked forward to them, watched most of the matches but definitely not been excited. I don't believe it is anything to do with how good England are either.
As we get older. we get grumpier
there will be kids absolutely buzzing for this world cup
20 years time they'll be moaning on the internet saying the same old stuff you are
I think the League Cup and FA Cup are diminished by the media and the FA who moved the KO to 5:15 or whatever, but not in the eyes of the real fans who would love to win them. I wish the media would stop running the competitions down, but I suspect they have got slightly better in this respect after Swansea and Wigan showed you can dream. Much as it hurt us at Wembley (though not as bad as 1981), it was good for the competition in a way. Swansea fans must have been in seventh heaven to win that league Cup.
What does Markt85 think? IS the FA Cup or League Cup diminished for you? I was gutted for the Hammers when they didn't win that FA Cup under Pardew. They'd played so well and if it wasn't for Slippy Steve, the Hammers would have won it - by the way, if we can't win a Cup I hope the Hammers do.
Yeah I used to get incredibly excited about the Workld Cup but as Markt85 says, we get older, grumpier. We've got other things to think about like paying the bills which take away that childlike excitement. Now I'm just really looking forward to it!
My first two world Cups that I watched were when England didn't qualify in '74 and '78 and I loved them despite that. I was only 4 when Mexico 70 was on late at night and I may have seen some highlights but have no vivid memory. '82 was extra special becuase England qualified. I'd still enjoy it if England didn't but there again I'm not that much of a "patriot" in that I'm half Indian and I don't get nationalistic - just love the (hopefully) feast of football - probably like a lot of City fans who have an Irish connection.
