Lack of excitement for the World Cup?

I think the last time I really cared about the England squad too much was at Euro 96 when Southgate took that crap penno. But I was young then and as the years have gone by I generally only care about City players. England squad is always so rag-infested that I just cant get emotionally involved in rooting for them.

I do like watching the tournament but only because I love the game in general. Anymore I just hope our guys stay healthy and that one/some of them end up with a medal.

It is odd how apathy seems to be setting in regarding international football. I feel like I have somehow "grown out" of being bothered about England, there seem to be quite a few people on here and people I speak to who think the same thing. I wonder whether people always got less arsed about international football and more bothered about their clubs or is this a modern thing. Is this basically international football going the same way as the FA Cup and the League Cup and just more of the Premier League and the CL marginalising all other football in the minds of English supporters?

It's because it's finally dawned on everyone that we're not very good. A lot of goodwill was slowly eroded by the so-called 'Golden Generation', and the overwhelming apathy we see now stems back to that period. The rest of the world are still mad for international football though.

Internet/Media era ... every game is over analysed, talked about too much.. ridiculous amount of slating and personal abuse to the players/manager who ever it is... constant criticism eventually spreads ... think England went about 15 games unbeaten upto the qualifiers... didn't stop everyone moaning and saying how shit we are... its a shame. If everyone just chilled and try not to be front of the queue in there hatred then i reckon we'd all enjoy football a lot more, now days if you show a bit of excitement and passion for your team then your in a minority.

I can't wait - I've got my World Cup Chart on the living room wall, and the flags of every competing country festooned outside the front of my house.
The fridge is full of beer, and I have several aerosols of paint to spray the dogs with Saint George's crosses with.
Only this morning I got into the spirit of things by yelling at my Polish neighbour 'where the fackin' hell are you?', before racially abusing my Asian newsagent.
Ingerland, Ingerland, Ingerland...

Racist.

Clarkied.

Looking forward to the World Cup. Of course I am.
Of corurse I’ll support England but I’ll be rooting for Zab & Serge, Sir Vincent, Fernandino Edin and yes, even Yaya (though not with quite the same enthusiasm as the others, I have to say). England and Bosnia clearly won’t win this World Cup. Wouldn’t it be great if Zaba, Serge , Vinny, Ferna or Merlin did?
Previous best ones? 1982 (because it was the first one I am old enough remember England qualifying for), 1986 and the pinnacle, 1990, are the ones I enjoyed the best. Everything since has been a huge disappointment.

This time, (more than any other time this time…)
From an England point of view surely it can’t be worse than last time? Can it? Hope Hodgson shows a little bit of flair. No point playing too safe.
My team for Italy would be
Hart;
Johnson (only because Hodgson hasn’t picked anyone better, and Milner can cover him), Jagielka, Cahill, Baines
Milner, Gerrard, Henderson,
Sterling, Sturridge, Lallana,
Of the subs I’d expect Barkley to be the most likely to push his way in and stay there. He is potentially World Class.

Given Italy’s (and England’s) poor track record early on I expect a cagey 1-1 or 0-0 draw in that game.

The fact that Engkand is a London team (they play all their home matches there), the so-called Golden Generation and the rag-infiltration of the FA and England has lessened my enthusiasm I have to say.

None of it is as important as any Manchester City game. I hope no one gets injured.

The FA CUp and League Cup are still special to me. Any other Blues think the same?
