Lack of pace

Silva's goal is justification enough that out and out pace isn't necessary. Strong, sensible running with good inter-changing are enough to beat a defence. From memory, there were at least 4 Liverpool players in close quarters but not one of them got near Milner or Silva.

Imagine Silva playing for Liverpool with their front three. That would be devastating.

What we need are options and at the moment we can't play the ball over the top.

David White is by far the fastest winger I've seen at City, whilst the most skilful winger is Peter Barnes.

Hopefully we will have that option next season with a real speed merchant in the team.

Navas has huge speed. But why the fuck he doesnt uses to take on defenders and beat them? He does it sometimes, but when he has the ball, he simply does too many other things with it instead of it.

Also on the other side, every time when Clichy starts going ahead 90% of the time he turns back, keeps the ball, waits for other players and passes it back. I mean thats potentially a good counter chance being wasted, or any other better chance.

We should get lot more out of these situations and put pressure on the opponent defence.

This post sums up simply why England haven't won the World Cup since 1966 and the problems in out game. English fans English managers and kids coaches always fall back on to pace as the answer . It isn't the answer it has failed football in England for 50 years . Technique and tactics win or lose you games which is why sides like Italy and Spain who rarely have much pace always do better than sides like England who value pace above all else. Our best players against Liverpool out slowest de michellis, Milner , dzeko , Garcia and silva that says it all. Maybe we had too many players picked for pace and physicality and not technique.

Fair play to Liverpool fist half. Intensity and passing accuracy was very good. Play one game a week without competing for multiple trophies, and largely play the same squad we might have a little more pace and fluidity. I seem to recall us having some devastatingly fast counterattacks which were a combination of speed, movement, and vision. Our problem seems to be dealing with teams that press and out possess us ( I choose to forget the freak losses early in the season). When unable to win the ball back we seem to bide our time until the storm passes. We adjusted and were the better side second half. If Dzeko and Silva score when we opened up the defence or Vinnie makes the clearance, a different narrative would have been written...tortoise wins. I have faith Pellers and Co. will strengthen our weaknesses in the offseason.

The biggest thing you can learn in football is that the fastest player on earth can't move at even half the pace of a well placed pass. Good teams keep the ball moving at pace and play with technique, poor teams try to run the ball and use fast players. We have plenty enough pace on the ball and our issue in this game was ball retention, control, accurate passing under pressure and positioning not pace. Yes pace helps a forward get past the last man or break away but it isn't necessary and as soon as it is seen as the answer you are losing the battle

Really think its not down to a 'lack of pace' because Navas is obviously quick, but it seems to be how unwillingly he is to run at players like for example Bale or even Milner when he came on who isnt as quick but by trying to take players on created much more.
Navas is fast but as soon as he comes 1 on 1 with a players he squares up has to play back instead of putting his head down and running at the player. All the best teams have players who do that, Suarez, ronaldo, di maria, bale, robben, ribery, Reus

I think we need to sign a quick winger who is very direct, and who is a speed dribbler, as in big champions league games when under the cosh or just out possessed we need to counter quickly and effectively like Chelsea in there winning season or Liverpool right now

Needs to be playing more, I could us dropping a Clanger and listening to offers in the summer.

Just as we did with Gareth Barry & Kolo.
History will repeat...

Really?

Seen a few people making comments along that line. Can only assume they perhaps haven't been watching Kolo much this season - there's a reason why he's fourth choice centre back for them.

Look what Bale did tonight. We have absolutely no wide option like that in this team. We were playing faster earlier this season, now it's gone back to the monotonous pass-and-hope-a-gap-appears of the Mancini era.
